 if the gear ratio in the monte rear end is different than the one in your rear end, then grab the speedometer driven gear from the monte carlo also. it is located in the transmission tailshaft at the end of the speedometer cable.

I'd get a Speedometer Cable & Casing Ratio Adaptor from United Speedometer Service. They are about $100 and you don't need to change gears in the tranny.

 the driven gear is at the end of the speedo cable, and not part of the transmission. most people dont take the gear with them when they pull a trans, so it may still be with the car.

This site will give you a calculator to figure out which gear you will need.

http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/speedo_gears.asp

If you pull off the cover where the speedometer cable goes, you will find the driven gear. It should pull out easily. The drive gear will be inside the transmission. If you can see the color, you will be able to look it up on the chart from the above website and figure out which driven gear you need.
