The factory speakers in my truck are shot. Any recommendations on what to replace them with? I just looking for something decent sounding. Will Radio Shack or Best Buy have something that will directly fit?
Thanks! :)

Yes, Most companies will sell 3 1/2. I have Pioneer coaxles & they sound great.

It's not so much as the diameter that you have to worry about as the depth of the 3.5" speaker that you use. Check Crutchfields website www.crutchfield.com for dimensions (depth) that will fit in a Monte Carlo dash. I looked it up before but can't remember what it was. Once you know the dimensions you should be able to find a pair at Best Buy or even one of the big auto parts chain stores (like Pep Boys) that has an audio section. I was looking at Sony Xplode, but I think the depth was 1/4" too much according to Crutchfield.

I seem to recall hearing that sound theory changes when speakers are mounted on the dash bouncing off the windshield. so speaker technology is different than if you mount in doors etc. any truth to this?

Radio Shack had nothing. :(
Best buy had one pair for $60.
The I went to Pep Boys. They had Sony Xplodes for much more than I was willing to pay. (I'm just looking for something decent to repalce the blown originals). Then I found off to the side, hanging on a peg, "3½" Original Factory Replacement" speakers. Metra CK-630S for $12 each. Some simple wiring, a little force and they fit. Sounds OK too.

Rich -
Did you by chance measure the depth of the Pep Boys speakers you used? You mentioned a little forcing was necessary - can you elucidate on that point a little? I need to replace one on my '82.
I have some 3.5" NOS speakers I bought years ago that are about 1 1/4 inch deep - were for an older Buick as I recall. Got a set of 4 with wiring connectors, brackets, etc. for $10. As I keep telling my wife - "it's not if you need it, it's WHEN you need it"! 8-)

Sorry, I didn't measure the depth. :( But it's not just the depth that's an issue. It's the diameter of the magnet too. This is because you can't just drop the speakers in directly from above. Because of the windsheld, you need to tip them in on an angle. There's plenty of room under the speaker, it's just getting them into the hole.
The speakers dropped most of the way in, then the magnet's edge caught on the inside of the hole. Just a little pushing and they dropped the rest of the way.
These speaekrs are about a ¼" deeper and a ¼" wider than the stock ones I pulled out, IIRC..

Rich - thanks for the info. I hear what you are saying about dropping the speaker in. I have not really looked hard at what would be involved so that helps. I did see some Monte speakers on Ebay and see that the magnets on those do give it considerable depth. What I have may work just fine, but I will take a look at Pep Boys as well here in PA and see if they have the same speakers.
Thanks again.
