I have never had an opportunity before to remove aujto glass, but I thought before I had whats left of my 87 parts Elky hauled off I should probably keep the curved rear window glass.I borrowed a removal toll from a freind,Its the type with a sharp curved point in a handle, attahed to another cable handle for 2-handed leverage when dragging it arpund the glass. My problem is,that the sealer is SO hard, like cement, that it doesnt penatrate at all.Any advice,or other methods to try? Thanks

Take your heat gun and heat the metal from the inside and it will soften up the sealer. Just take your time and you can work your way right around. Keep cleaning the knife with a little lacquer thinner or mineral spirits will help it slide through too.

I took the glass out nof my 80 and had the same problem you're having. Most of the adhesive was hard as a rock, but it was leaking all along the bottom.
If you use heat you MUST be carefull not to aply too much heat as this will deffinately crack the glass. It won't take much.
If you take your time and cut as much off with a utility knife and remove all you can around the outer edge, you can do it.
I had to use both the removal tool and a utility knife on the inside and out just to get it out.
Putting it back is another story! lol
good luck

I use a 4-5 foot length of 12 or 14 gauge stainless steel stranded wire. You can buy it at any hardware store for $.30/ft. Carefully use an awl to get a small hole started in the sealant at the top of the window. Thread the wire through the hole. I use a set of vice grips on each end of the wire and use it to saw through the window sealant. Leverage is very important. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get the window out. I've removed several El Camino windows this way. Don't try this with a smaller gauge wire as it will just break.Sounds like a 2 man job? I'm working alone,unfortunately.... :-(
