17x7's should fit with a conservative sized tire but the 17x9's may have clearance issues with a wider tire. This assumes a factory suspension setup.

I'd say nothing wider than a 255mm section width on a stock suspension setup on the rear. 235 on the front should be no issue.

That's just an opinion, Your El Camino is considered part of the third generation so wait for other forum members who own this specific generation to answer your questions too.

Watch the fronts I just did this 3 months ago 245 were to cloose to use on stock everything in the suspension in the front of my 69. The final was Foose Legends 17x8 all around on Kuhmo SPT tires. front 235x55x17 and the rears 255x50x17. Realy sizes nice to a stock stance 69, the tires have a lot more side wall than most guys use, the ride is way better than 45 or lower profile rubber band tires below 40 its a joke as to the ride. These Kuhmo are real good in the rain and are plenty sticky for me and average about $100.00 per corner + you wheel. check my pic to see the wheels and tire for stance
