I have a 71 GMC Sprint and am wondering how much paint I may need. I am looking to put about 3 coats and I am not spraying the bed (Rhino Lining), underhood, or engine compartment. Any help would be great!

Several factors come into play -

Paint type - Single stage? or Base/Clear? You'll need less paint for the base/clear, but you'll have the additional cost of the clear to take into account.

Color - Lighter colors and metallics may need more paint.

Polish - will you wet sand and buff, or just go 'as is' when done? Sanding a solid single stage color will require more paint.

Paint Gun - HVLP (high volume/low pressure) or a gravity feed gun will save paint. HVLP guns are tricky and expensive -if you're using an old suction gun, most of the paint becomes overspray!

Paint is so expensive now, so buying the correct amount is more of an issue than it used to be.

Well I've been looking at the Dupli-Color Paint Shop paint. So it will be base/clear. And I am using a gravity feed gun. Going with hugger orange, figuring on medium coat, heavy, then shooting 12 inches back for the 3rd. Then the paint shop has a metalic clear that you can shoot after the base. Then finish with a clear.

I've been seeing a lot of advertising for the Paint Shop (on Two Guys Garage, etc.). Post a review if you go ahead with their products - I'm interested to see how it works. Since their colors are pre-packaged, I would think you could return any un-opened cans. I believe you can spray right out of the can - all pre-mixed - so a gallon of color (4 qts.)should be plenty, then your clears on top of that.

The nice part is there is no 'recoat window', which dictates how fast you have to spray with non-lacquer type paint.

Hugger orange is great - Good luck!

The Dupli-Color is LACQUER. It is junk. You will use twice as much as you normally would because the paint is pre-reduced( they reduce it more than you normally would so they can sell more paint for less cost to them.). You're not saving any money because I think it is @$30.00 a quart for paint. 4 quarts=120.00And I can almost guarantee you aren't going to paint the car with that. Not getting completely covered. then you have clear. You might as well buy decent paint and have 10 times the paint job. The advertising doesn't mean ANYTHING. They pay money to run advertisements. I'd say good things if they paid me! You can buy inexpensive URETHANE for around the same price your going to spend on this junk.

Yup that stuff is lacquer and I wouldn't use lacquer on anything. It'll look good for a very very short time.

Go here for Kirker paints. www.smartshoppersinc.com The Kirker stuff is a good product at a reasonable price.
