I have an 85 caballero with a 305. I put a holley carb and vacuum advance distributor on it. I have to hold the gas pedal to the floor for it to crank up, and as soon as I take my foot off the gas completely, it dies. I have timing set at about 8 degrees and I'm pretty confident the carb isn't that out of tune. Any ideas?

Has this combination, (carb and dist.) ran before or is this the first time you have tried to start it up after installing them? Sounds like a massive vacuum leak to me. Is there a thick base gasket under the carb?

Its not really new, I've been playing with it off and on, had a huge problem that turned out to be the power valve. I think it has a thin gasket. It also runs rough when I keep the throttle down, so a vacuum leak makes sense
