Well, I pulled off my hood, and the fiberglass front part of my '82 Elk, sanded all down and made it smooth before priming, and putting on a layer of color... For specifics:

Dupont NASON Selectprime 421-17 & 421-19 2K Urethane Primer (Reading off data sheets... I don't know which one I actually have, I can check in the morning if it's important)

Dupont NASON Ful-Base B/C Basecoat

Dupont NASON SelectClear 498-00 Multi=panel & Overall Clearcoat

Now, the clearcoat is where I'm hitting a tough spot, in the technical manual, it says:

"For industrial Use only by professional, trained painters. Not for sale to or use by the general public..... blah blah.... Ready to use paint materials containing ISOCYANATES can cause irritation of the respratory organs and hypersensitive reactions. Asthma sufferers must not be asked to work with products containing Isocyanates.

Do not sand without a NIOSH approved AIr Purifying Respirator with particulate filters or appropriate ventilation and gloves."

Now, I'm not a professional, trained painter... and am definitely the general public, just kinda flying by the seat of my pants on this project. I have a respirator, but I've long since lost the documentation on it, so I don't know if it's NIOSH approved or not.... Also, I'm pretty worried about Isocyanates... that sounds an awefull lot like it contains cyanide, and I prefer to avoid things that will kill me in very small quantities...

But, I think it's the only kind of clearcoat the place I bought it from has.... and, according to the datasheet for my basecoat, it /needs/ a clear coat. But then, it also says I need a sealer, which my primer sheet says I do not for that type of basecoat... And, the person at the store didn't give me any sealer, and they were very helpfull, and picked out a ton of other stuff I needed, that I had no clue about. I asked if it would kill me, or be horrible terrible stuff, but they said if I've got a respirator, I should be fine >.>

Opinions?

I just had my 68 primer, painted, and 3 layers of clear coat, I was around alot while it was being done and it was no big deal. The painter did wear a respirator, but it wasn't nothing special.
I'm not a expert (but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn last night) Ha-HA but any decent respirator should work
However it's never to soon to make a WILL
Good Luck

My will is simple... if I die, bury me with my El Camino :P

But yeah... that's... kinda what I was thinking... but, I'd prefer to avoid death/crippling illness if at all possible... so, I'll stick it out and see what more professional people might think :P

heyo im a auto painter by trade, and isocyanates are nasty things if you have a reaction to them or have repeated exposure... that being said if all you are painting a header panel if you wear a respirator and have adequate ventilation you should be alright. be careful with left overs that have been catylized and wear gloves when mixing and cleaning guns.. also keep pets and kids away as they are expecially suseptible to iso's . the main objection i have run into painting at home is the niebors complainin abt the odoure...... :P

Well, I have had asthma, but very, very mild case.... I'm painting my hood, and the nose... I have a makeshift booth set-up, consisting of a big piece of clear plastic, wrapped arround a spot in my garage... The rafters are open, but, that's as much ventilation as I've got.

I've got vinyl gloves... is that good enough? Also, my respirator, while it is a pretty high-end as far as I can tell, doesn't quite fit me right... it's too small for my face, so I can still smell what I"m working on most of the time, though it's much, much better... I dunno...

sounds like yer setup is alright do you have water trap on compressor ? if you dont go to paint store and get a dessicant ball and put it inline it will make for a better, more durable finish... as far as the respirator if it doesnt fit well DO NOT wear it and paint ! go to paint store and get a disposable one.. only 20- 30 $ depending.. with the history of asthma a leaky respirator may aggrivate it. remember take your time and follow the flash times between coats and if at first you dont succeed it can be fixed !!

Eh, I just have it, more or less... it only bothers me if I start running far... but, I don't need an inhaler, emergency or otherwise...

No, I don't have a water-trap... But, I'd have to buy more than just the trap :P There'd be the extra hose, and any additonal connectors I'd need.... Still probably not that expensive, and would have been worth it if I hadn't already done almost everything already. :P

And, I've been doing my very best to stick to the flash-times... which is very contradictory to my nature :P It seems to be going very well so far... with only a slight snag here and there.

Oh, another question... I am planning to put some stripes on my hood... but, the paintstore doesn't have the paint I need to do it, but i"ll need my car before I can get the paint... So, can I put a clearcoat on, then put on the black paint? Or, do I have to go without clear for now, and do it when I got the stripes on? Thanks.

if you buy dessacant ball you just need a nipple and a coupler..screw them to the ball and put inline..... no extra hoses req... you can add the stripes later if so desired, are they going to be gloss or flat ? if gloss unless u want a edge on stripe u will have to re clear all panels u stripe , and to get them smooth u must cut and rub them.. if u are painting them flat u will have to live with a edge as u dont clearcoat them.. GET A NEW RESPIRATOR!! as soon as u can. not to belabor the point it is a pet peeve of mine.. lol
as far as flash times i know what u mean.... :-D
ps dont leave basecoat longer than 12 hrs without claring or u will have to sand it and rebase before clearing... V

Oh... crap..... x.x I was wondering about that... but, the sheet didn't say anything... all it says is I can sand it after an overnight dry x.x Well... no biggie.. I got plenty of paint... and 4 more days of vacation.

Well... I went out and put the clear on... at 2am :P 6-7 hrs after I put on the base-coat. And, I'm fine... Only a little skin melted off, but that'll heal in a day or so I imagine.

Do I need to burn my clothes I was wearing? or anything extreme like that? I jarred up the lacqure thinner I cleaned with, to keep from contaminating anything, and sealed up the paintstick and filter...

And, for the record, it's beautiful :D
