Getting ready to start back in on my 66...again. I'd like to find a good sprayable primer/sealer to use instead of waiting for Wal Mart to get the next shipment of 6 cans in stock. Anyone happen to know of a good primer/sealer that is available in quarts, maybe even a good 2 part epoxy spray. I have a good detail gun and compressor to shoot the car in sections with primer as I get it done. I've stripped about 90% of the body down with chemical stripper, treated the panels to a coat of ospho to retard further rust. It is very slow going doing this project by myself. I would like to find a source of supply for the seam sealer compound for the bed area and the side roof drip rail areas. Tried some of the NAPA brand seam sealer on the passengers side drip rail and it is not at all like the original. I have been taking pics with the digital camera as I go along to record the process.

POR15 products, expensive but probably the best available.

ppg has dp40 which is good and k38 which is real good. i just sprayed my 86 with both. i layed the dp40 firts and then the next day i sprayed the k38. after the k38 you can block it with 320 and start spraying color. the dp40 and the k38 both take 3 days to dry properly.

The last couple of tubes of seam sealer I got from AutoZone. As far as paints you should be able to pick some up locally at an automotive paint supplier. There are at least three or four places in Tarrant County (Ft. Worth) and at least two in Johnson County, that I know of and no telling how many in the Dallas area so I am sure tha there is one sonewhere close to you.

You'd possibly get a better prince than at Eastwood, their stuff is pretty expensive. Don't use paint bombs on your exterior body surfaces. Its a bitch to remove and my experience is they are crap, generally. In the engine compartment or the Duplicolor High Heat enamal for engines is pretty good for that but I wouldn't use a paint bomb as a base for a paint job.

Its just my thoughts.

Hey Scrubby, how did that ospho work out, did it stay tacky for a long time? And if you could, keep us posted on your progress, I'm especially interested because I'll probably be doing the same thing :D

Thanx,
Lee (Caveman49)

i've used ospho. that stuff works great. it prevents pannles from rusting or if the pannles have rust it treats it. we have left parts out in the weather for months with ospho on it and no rust. the only down side is it smells like rotten eggs.

Once the layers of paint were removed using aircraft paint remover, I used a spray bottle to apply the ospho then wiped off the excess, it worked just as it should. It did stay tacky so I let mine sit until dry usually about 24 hours or so, went over it with 220 grit and applied the primer/sealer ( Duplicolor ). Did this just to stop the rust and clear up what was there, for now. I did get a bit of bleed back in spots....spray primer bombs on a windy day did not work so well. I have started posting a few pics to the web when I started this last summer AGAIN.

I'll try to keep up with posting a few pics as I go along.

Thanx Scrubby, I've tried ospho once and maybe it was the 100% humidity when I used it, but it seemed to take forever to dry. But it did worked as advertised.
On the upside, I plan on using POR15 as well, and from my understanding it works better with moisture! 8O That's a good thing, because we definitely get some humidity here in LA (Lower AL).

Hey Scrubby,

I have not used POR 15 yet, but plan to on the frame and underside of my 60. As for the exterior body panels, I have not seen a better primer that Dupont's URO primer/sealer. It is enamel based and you put a hardener into it, so the pot life is only a couple hours. It is slow drying, but cures hard as nails and unlike the old lacquer based primers, it does not "lift" the edges of your body work. It is also self-etching primer, so any bare metal spots are not an issue as with other primers that require an adhesion coat for bare spots. It should be available at any auto paint supply house that carries DuPont paints. It also comes in quart cans.

As others have posted, I would not recommend spray cans as they are cheap and break down quickly in the elements.

Has anyone else out there used POR 15 on exterior panels? Over body work? I am curious as to the applications of this primer - I was under the impression that it was made only for the underside of the car . . .

Anyway, I hope your car turns out to be a beautiful thang.

Dan

Sure would this web page is a pain. I'd like to find a program that would let me set this stuff up without using HTML

You don't really have to know a lot to have a real basic page. I think ECC has a small application that will do that but if not, C/Net will. You can also use MS Word, MS Front page, Yahoo has a program call site builder but it will want to publish to a Yahoo site only. Most word processors will "Save As" HTML format. Then just upload the pages and associated directories and files.

Did you get it? I sent it.

I got it and it appears to be set up. I'm checking it now.
