I must completely rewire my 1970 EC / SS / 396. Two owners ago the systems took a bad chop job and it all has to go. Has anyone had a good experience with either after market or stock re-wire kits that are out there. I have looked at Ron Francis, Painless and stock harnesses from Elky suppliers. Francis and Painless do not cover everything and so the owner has to take the initiative in several areas that are not covered by the kits. I'm looking for an all inclusive kit and anyone who has had a good experience to go with it. Any suggestions???????

I hope some people give you some good information because I also need a new harness from the headlights to the tail-lights on my '68. I would so like to find a complete package myself. From just looking at the individual sets, it's not going to be cheap.

"Factory Fit" at http://www.factoryfit.com/CatalogPages/I-2003FFitChevelle-7.pdf has most all the wiring "Stock" for your truck I think.

For my 80 I got a painless kit, to be installed, it is their GM plug generic harness, 18 circuits with everything. If you have no compunction with crimping on connectors and, in some cases improving the way it fits, the painless are hands down the best for the money, my opinion.

I will add some waterproof connectors, I've already got them, to the engine harness so if I have to pull the engine I will only have to unplug it not have to worry about all that loose wire in the compartment or where it came from etc... SO that is why I think painless is the best for the money. The wire is all new and heavier gage than necessary but good enough for today's electronics and components. Sorry I don't mean to sound like an Advertisement.

Factory Fit will have the correct plugs and year specific gagged and coded wires. So you do have a choice. Either way its a pretty aggressive project and good luck. My 80 is apart so installation is going to be a breeze but if I had to put one in the 76 that would be a lot harder its a running Elky. I could some day though. I've seen the wires in my dash in the 76. They are in poor shape. Not dangerous yet but will be. After all its well past its planned life span now so things will go bad.

The 80 has everything new except the chassis and some body parts. So I'll never have to worry about it for basically the rest of my life, electrical and body wise that is. Engine and transmission are probably a different story. If it runs like I planned it to then yeah, a transmission and engine will eventually be rebuilt, replaced upgraded or something. I'll flat out tear it up. :D

Pete..........Thank you for your input. Sounding like an advertisement was just fine. I was looking for people who had good experiences with any of these kits. Did the Painless kit include wiring for your heating and air conditioning circuits? Did it include new bulb sockets for parking, dirctional etc.? I will also investigate the site you suggested.
Thanks again.............Russell

I have never dealt with Painless products myself as I prefer to have a stock factory-like harness to put back in so there are no surprizes. I have purchased harness sections from National Parts Depot, and if i remember correctly M&H Fabrications was the brand. I liked these as they are pretty much identical to what the factory used- right down to the correct connectors and sockets and wrapping. From what I have seen from Painless, they are good if you don't mind the non-stock appearance.
I have never seen a complete kit, only seperate sections (under dash, rear lamp, engine, front lamp) Make no mistake that it will not be cheap, but knowing that you don't have to worry anymore about a butchered harness is a good feeling. Electrical fires are not a good thing.
Other repro parts companies will probably have the same selections as the harnesses usually come from a supplier who uses them as their distributors.
Good luck
