here's my first ever question on this site....please be kind, cus I know almost nothing (spelled NUFFINK) about cars. My 84 Conquista needs new weatherstripping around both doors...can I just go to an auto shop and buy 'generic' weatherstrip, or do I have to buy it specifically for my car?

Caroline;

Go here:
http://www.elcaminoss.com/ec%20replacements.htm

Or here:
http://www.elcaminostore.com/catalog-pages/02group.htm#door-weatherstrip

And don't forget to ask for the ECC/NECOA discount!

I also see new ones for sale on evil bay all the time, look for sellers coppers234 or a1 automotive.

I love to support our sponsors on my Elky/GMC parts purchases, but these door seals are available from any Chevrolet parts department. Just ask for 1978-1987 El Camino door weatherstripping. The quickest numbers I can find are for the GMC Caballero: Weatherstrip, door, #20008188 (right hand), #20008189 (left hand). There is also a sealing strip for each side, #20079312 and #20079313.

If you REALLY live in the boonies, where the only dealership is John Deere tractors... you can order from GMPartsDirect: www.gmpartsdirect.com

GM OEM seals ar slightly more expensive, but IMHO the quality is superior to the aftermarket ones like Soffseal (http://www.soffseal.com/) or Metro (http://www.metrommp.com/).

Caroline,

Try this website for your door weatherstrip. www.e-weatherstrip.com

They have the BEST prices of anyone I've ever seen and their service is quick too.

They handle Softseal, Metro, Steele, etc.

The last time I checked their price on door weatherstrip for 78-87 El Caminos was $59.00 a pair plus shipping. Not bad compared to $89.00 like some of the other places are asking for the same brands.

And no, I don't work for these people and don't know them personally.

i was disappointed with Softseal. The plastic pins were too small and did not stay put at all.

slakfish:

Log onto the Soffseal website and tell them you got a bad product.

I know Gary Anderson personally, he'll make it right.

Besides, we need to bitch at our suppliers, if the product doesn't work.

Sorry for you disappointment,

Elky77

Has anyone else had this problem with soft seal I am getting ready to order a seal kit and would like to know which ones work well.

Immediately after I bought my '79 I replaced the door and window opening weatherstrips. I bought "no-name" weatherstrips from an Ebay vendor and I guess I got lucky because they fit well and were easy to install. The hardest part was removing the old weatherstrips and adhesive. I suspect that all the available weatherstripping is manufactured by one vendor.

I just installed door weatherstripping on my 72 and they went on perfectly except one place where rust removed the hole for the plastic pin 8O ... which of course isnt anything thats SoffSeal's fault...

other than that, it seems a fine product, but it is the only one I have ever used, so I cant say that there ARENT better ones out there....

I also ordered the window felts and should receive them tomorrow. Will update if any problems with them.
