Ok. I rebuilt my engine recently and got it to fire up and run for a good 20 min. Then when I went to drive it later I had no starter. I'm assuming my header cooked it, which never happened with the "old engine" but now the engine is a whole new animal. So I did a little research and found a couple different styles of heat shields.
There is a cloth like thermo wrap that goes around the starter, and a stainless or aluminum metal shield that bolts on (mr. gasket). Before I make a purchase I wanted to know if one was significantly better then the other. The price is close enough between them that it is not an issue either. Thanks, hopefully I'll be able to put a few miles on tonight. :)

Is the starter literally "cooked"??
Or is it just dead and won't turn over.

It may be a heat soak problem with the solenoid if it's not literally "cooked"

Very common on older chevys. I got a remote solenoid hookup
from MAD to cure it on mine. Thermo wrap does work well but
never fully cured the starter solenoid heat soak problem.
The shields look nice but aren't going to do that much to keep the
heat away from the starter. They also get in the way when you have to work on it.

the starter was more dead and wouldn't turn over. I'll look up the MAD kit and see what its all about.

Thanks elcamino74 guy. heres the website if anyone is interested: (http://www.madelectrical.com./catalog/st-1.shtml) looks like the cure for my starter porblems. And for 30 bucks if it saves me from replacing my starter again its money well spent. There are some other neat products on their website I might have to try out also...

Yeah, There'll only be one wire to your starter and all the other wiring will go to the remote solenoid which makes it much easier to deal with fusible links and such.

I'm a BIG fan of Mad Electrical. He has a Camino himself and helped me re-design an all new wiring harness. This man truly knows his stuff at a conceptual design level.

The new harness design incorporates all of his enhancements. The headlights can smoke retinas at 100 yards, runs cool, stereo has plenty of power, battery stays fully charged, room for accessories, etc. I learned more from him in a month than I learned from other "electrical" guys over 30 years.

Guess you can tell I've formed an opinion.

Take care.

I have become a fan of Mad Electrical from just reading the tech articles on his web site. I was surprised to learn of the short comings of the one-wire alternator vs. the standard or three-wire alternator. Link:

WOW! There is a lot of good reading on that site. I think I'll order the remote solenoid for my car. And I found the answer to my temp sending unit as well! I'm a fan as well just from his tech articles.
