Go to Jim Pace performance parts. He sells both performance crate engines and stock crate engines. You get a good guarantee with them that is actually a GM warranty that is suppose to be good at any GM Dealer.
A stock 350, which is a good foundation and not a re-built engine from some no-body, but a new assembly if I remember correctly he sells for like 1400
The universal 350 is a brand new long block used to cover most GM applications from ¦1970-1985 and will produce up to 260hp and 350 foot pounds of torque with a four-barrel carburetor and headers. The Universal '350 is great as a small block replacement
This is the full deal:
“The Package” …..Two Hours and a Six-Pack!
We start with our legendary Universal ‘350 crate motor and include all the accessories to make your installation easy. The list includes everything from a high performance fuel pump to a Edelbrock aluminum intake manifold and carburetor. “The Package” includes a list of products from reputable manufactures such as ARP, Edelbrock, Moroso, Proform, and Made For You all of which are synonymous with quality and performance. Again, we are striving to make your life easy at an affordable price. With two hours of your time and a six-pack of your favorite beverage you will have a complete motor ready to drop-in. Your finished product will generate 260 horsepower, 350 foot-pounds of torque, and a whole lot of looks! · Universal ‘350 long block assembly · 8” GM Balancer with hardware · Auto trans flywheel with bolts · Oil filter mounting adapter with bolts · Thermostat with housing · AC Delco wire set with spark plugs · Edelbrock fuel system (complete with Performer intake, fuel pump, and 600cfm carb) · Complete H.E.I. distributor · AC Delco starter · ARP hardware · Made For You wire looms · Chrome GM air cleaner assembly (Note: Does not include Water Pump, Pulleys, or Brackets. Requires final assembly of components)

You can also go to your local GM dealer in most cases and get the same thing, it just costs a little more.
Just a thought.
I purchased a re-built engine for one of my Elkys and let me tell you it suked bad and within two years I had to replace it. So what I spent on it was waisted.

The sky is the limit as far as engines go. Do alot of research & decide before hand what you want from your engine( gas mileage & performance, etc).

g.m. and jegs offer some 350's at reasonable prices with different horsepower ranges. i think they have a base 350 with like 330 hp. for like $2200 with out intake and carb or one with the same hp. with intake and carb for like $3300.
