Hello everybody as you can see im new here. Right now i have a 1987 el camino v6 :( and being fifteen going on sixteen i really wanna get as much power out of the v6 as i can and i wanted to know, would it be better to just scrap the v6 and try to find a 305? Or would it be more cost effective to just try to enhance the v6? Thanks for the help.

I've never had much luck with the 305. You might want to stay with the v6 unless you can get your hands on a 350.

use the search function of forum site...this has been discussed SEVERAL TIMES. Best thing to do is get a job, make money, save up, buy a 350.

do you have the overdrive transmission? (4 speed auto)
if you do, you should be able to get 18 MPG with a 350. probably close to what you're getting with the 4.3
don't bother with a 305 for performance. they have a small bore and long stroke, so low compression, and limited head choices plague this engine.
the 4.3 is a better performance engine than a 305 actually. the 91-93 GMC Syclone and Typhoon use a turbo 4.3 that will lay the smack down on alot of 350s. if you'd like to know more about those engines check out www.SyTy.net and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GMC_Syclone
the 350 is the most realistic option for a high school budget though (I'm in HS too). they're easy to work on, easy to upgrade, and there are tons of performance parts available, so they are very affordable.
