: operating temp to cold??

my thermostat is a 160F .. is that to low of a operating temp?? should i go higher if my car never over heats now how it is or will it over heat easier at 180?

So long as the engine temperature eventually reaches between 180 and 190 it's fine. If you constantly run at say 140 that could cause incomplete combustion and poor performance/fuel economy. There's a sweet spot for engine temperature where 220 is too hot for most cars and 160 is too cold. Most of the time a 160 degree thermostat is installed in engines that are known to run hotter (Like LTI's in late 90's F bodies) or have performance enhancements or tweaks (like aggressive timing) that increase engine temperatures.

I know one old time mechanic that says that small block chevys should run around 200 degrees on average for best performance/economy. Down here in the sunny part of AZ I prefer a little less heat when its 110 outside.
