I have a problem with my '84 Conquista shredding her alternator belts. (350 V8 w/700R4 Trans) The engine area appears to be mostly stock with the exception of the chrome valvue covers and upper alternator bracket. It even still has all of the smog equipment functioning so it will pass emisions.

I bought this vehicle less than six months ago and I have had to replace my alternator belt five maybe six times already ( and I have only put about 3000 mi. on her in that time).

There does not appear to be any burrs on any of the pulleys that the belt rides on that would cause this problem to occurr or continue. However, the vehicle does not have the original upper bracket for the alternator it was replaced with a chrome after market version by a previous owner. This bracket also does not have the hole in it to aide in adjusting the belt tension like the stock one does. I'm wondering could there be a poor alignment problem because of the aftermarket bracket causing these troubles? I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this problem. Because I'm beginning to get very frustrated with this habitual annoyance.

try looking at the belt from the side of the car and see if it is slanted toward or away from the engine in relation to the waterpump pulley. either could cause it to wear excessively.

but I bet the bracket is to blame. one way or another.

What Bad said or you're not getting the tension right.

I did see it was slanted away from water pump. Made an adjustment and so far so good. Thanks

Oh, I also swapped the chrome aftermarket upper alternator bracket for a oem bracket.

Sounds like a common problem, my car had the incorrect bracket
for the P/S and it made a bad noise after adding lots of washers to align the belt it was fixed & noise free. Get the belt aligned with the pullys, & the components, the straighter the belt, the less negative tension on the components and belts. If nessasary use a tension tool for proper belt tension the are cheap and useful(components will last longer), use a cheap laser for belt alignment.
