I got a hold of a powerglide and i was wondering if any one has put one in their elky and if they like it, i thought it would jsut be a kewl combo... and how much mod is required ot put one in

Question is...why? Even if you were radically building your Elky strictly for strip use, I wouldn't recommend a powerglide, I'd go with a 400THD. There would be no benefit to using this trans if your going to drive it on the street and it'll cost you a major loss in fuel economy, plus you'll need a different/modified trans crossmember, a longer driveshaft, and a different shifter. The only way I would even consider using a powerglide is if I had 700+hp, my engine was built to perform above 5000 RPM and I had a 3500 RPM or more stall speed torque converter...and even then I'd still use a 400THD. Just my opinion.

Powerglides were, at one time, a good transmission for strip and lots of racers still run them but not in a street drivin car unless you are driving an old factory resto. I think now you can build the crap out of a powerglide (Two speed Slip and Slide) and for the 1/8th that is pretty much all you'll need. I'd have another gear waiting if I were to be running a 1/4 Mi.. :D I've ran the 1/8th and my truck never got to third gear. We run a Blown Coop that runs in the 4s and it never gets past 2nd gear, it has a 5.88:1 gear set and 400 THD so for the 1/8th mi. two gears are pretty much all you need. For the 1/4 that changes.

I would not run a powerglide in my Elkys. But I can see where a racer could and possibly would.

Just my 0.05 cents worth.

The Powerglide was a great trans in 1954!!! You want more gears not less.
