For those that don't know there is another one of those damn viruses going around. This one is even good enough to send emails and disguise itself as someone elses email. I should know I keep getting bounced emails from addresses that I've never heard of. And I'm getting emails back from systems that are trying to tell me my system is infected. So far my system has stopped 15-20 infected emails that have tried to come in. Funny thing is most of them have a .dk or .de extension. So I guess someones system overseas is acting like it's my email. I've scanned my system twice and even ran a fix-it tool that scans just for this new one. What a pain in the butt.

For anyone that wants to run the fix-it tool on their system to check it here's a link to the Symantec web site. The link on the page to download it is about half way down.

My Norton antivirus stopped that one the other day. Anyone would be foolish not to have antivirus protection now a days.

Yep I've been running Anti-virus software for years. Just wish the person's system that is sending emails with my address did. Wish I knew who overseas would have my email addy in their contacts list that the virus would be able to get to it. :?

This is a particularly nasty virus - I got it on my business laptop, (saw an e-mail sent from a customer and opened it. BIG MISTAKE! His address book had been 'stolen' and was sending out viruses.) Took me about four hours and a good friend, who wasn't infected to fix it with the removal tool offered by Symantec last Tuesday. The virus will start sending out random casts from your address book, luckliy I was on a dial up line and realized what was happening before the first one went out, so I don't think I infected anyone else.

I travel a lot and need my laptop for communications with our home office in PA & mfg. plants in Europe. To be without it, well I might as well try communicating with two tin cans and a line of string. I now find myself performing a full scan at least twice a week (sometimes every other day)and religiously do a Live Update at least once a week, sometimes more. I read in the LA times that this latest virus (Novarg or MyDoom) was begun by Linux supporters - I'd like to get my hands on them - they would'n t be 'sitting' at their computers for a while...

One other thing I did a while back was to add an address in my book starting with 'AAA', followed with my full address. That way, if an unknown/new virus is sending from my list, it will come back as undeliverable, and I'll know I'm infected. It's worked for me but, still a GOOD idea to keep your virus protection current. ( from experience !!)

Doctors get to kill viruses and their causes, why can't we? :sarcasm:

do a search on google for AVG and get it. its free and is much better then norton in my opinion. If u dont open email attachments thats 90% of the battle. i also recommend u get a firewall to protect your pc. Sygate makes a good firewall to. Even with a firewall its still possible for a hacker to get control on a system just so many work arounds these days.

I like the AAA e-mail address, and will definitely add it. I have heard though, that in many cases, the virus will start sending out in a random pattern, not neccesarily in alphabetical order, but, hey - it can't hurt. Thanks for the tip.

I also use AVG anti-virus that I found via the Google search engine and I also use the AAA address in my address book.

The free version of AVG works fine, but the licensed version is only $10.00 and eliminates the repetitive screens when the software opens. $10.00 paid to the developer is a very reasonable price for his work. For years, I ran McAfee and had problem after problem caused by downloading the upgrades which screwed up the .dat files. With AVG, I have had no such problems.

Too bad we have to go to such extremes just to protect ourselves. It may not be in my lifetime, but the time will surely come when the guilty parties will be immediately identified and punished. That technology just has to catch up with what is being done today.

If anyone is interested there is an excellent article on this virus in the San Francisco Chronicle - www.sfgate.com/business. (It also gives a great history of viruses from Meliisa to SoBig.)

For anyone who thinks their computer is infected with either of the Mydoom worm variants (Mydoom.A and Mydoom.B) there is an easy way to check your hard drive. See the below link.
