Hi all,

I am new here to this board as my dad and I just got a 1970 El Camino SS 396 all factory original with only 43,000 miles on it. So original it even has the bias ply tires on it. This car is fully optioned including the power bucket seats, Vigilite light monitoring system, cruise control, power disc brakes, and much more.

:?: What I am wondering is how many 1970 El Caminos were made with the bucket seat option? Is there anyway that these numbers can be traced? I know that the SS package can not be tracked since it was a RPO code in 1970 and not in the VIN number. Any help would be greatly appreciated since I am trying to document this car. The cowl tag has the trim code of 756 which I have found to stand for Black Bucket Seats but since most of the el caminos I have seen have always been bench seats, I am wondering if this is a rare car?

Until someone gets into Chevrolet's records (like Nolan Adams and Michael Antonick did with the Corvette production records), we won't know how many El Caminos were produced with each option.

I generally consider an option to be "rare" if it was produced in less than 5 or 10% of each model year. In my guesstimate bucket seats in the '70 Elky was more than 10%.

Rare, or not, bucket seats and the SS option in an Elky are highly desirable by most collectors/owners. Sounds like you've got a good find.

One of the other options that our car has is the Vigilite headlight monitoring system. I have been told that this is a very rare option also for Chevys. This car seems to be fully loaded including a AM/FM Stereo/ 8-track radio which everything on it still works. It even has a washer fluid monitoring system also that when the washer fluid gets low, a light goes on at the washer bottle and sends a fiber optic light to a spot on the lower part of the dash. This is the first Chevy that I have seen to ever have this option.
