: Edelbrock Carb problem

I am switching from a Holley 750 to a Edelbrock 600 carb. When i first got the 600 on i had a inch spacer between the manifold and the carb. I had to take it off because it was leaking fuel on the manifold but it was running fine. After getting rid of the spacer I put the 600 back on and this is where the problems start.
It will not start. There is fuel pressure but no fuel is being shot down the barrels. I dont know if the float is stuck or if it is flooded?? I do know that when i took off the 600 after it was leaking, i fliped it over and all the fuel in it spilled all over the carb. Also, please keep in mind this carb was sitting for over a year and a half, but i cleaned the hell out if it with carb cleaner. Please help!

Thanks!

If you have presure (fuel) as you say, to the Carb, but nothing squrts, it's most likely a needle & seat issue. Try pouring about a half a shot glass of fuel down the Carb and see if it will fire.

"I flipped it over":buttkick:Never a good idea. Trash laying in the bottom is now floating around looking for some bad place to go. You probably need to open it up and do a thorough cleaning.

I did pour some fuel down the barrel and it would just sputter for about half a second. I think that i will have to get a kit. Since i did pour some fuel in the barrel and really nothing happened, what does that mean? Thanks guys!

I assume the fuel pressure is being read when you're trying to crank it over unless you have an electric fuel pump.
The thing that stands out is the 1 inch spacer. If it worked with the spacer and
now it doesn't that might indicate some issue with the linkage. Maybe the accelerator pump
linkage is bound up or the linkage is in the wrong hole on the pump lever?

That model of Edelbrock follows the old AFB design with dual floats. It's possible the brass floats have developed a pinhole and have sunk into the float bowls or the floats are misadjusted. That could affect the operation of the primary squirters.

I think you got the float stuck, take it off and leave right side up the jiggle it and put it back on.. The other answers are B.S. because it would still run just maybe run crappy. But it would run..The guy above said something about the linkage make sure you have some one else turn it over while you watch the linkage action..

I had a similar prob with an eledebrock I took off the air cleaner and manual held the choke while priming it with a little fuel, it started but ran like crap, than I got online and ordered a rebuilt holley from national carburetor for 150 and now it works great.(LOL)
I would recomend a full tear down and rebuild, good luck.

The spacer has to do with what kind of manifold you have. I just put a 600cfm edelbrock on my elco. The engine is all original. If you have a quadrojet manifold you need the spacer. Edelbrock carbs are for sguare bore carbs so with the old manifold you dont get a good seal with them. The spacer takes the place of the old carb on the bottom and makes a new spot for the new carb on the top thuse making a better seal. I beleave that your vacum would be effected with a bad seal I dont think it would leak. The seals on the carb itself might be back thus resulting in gass to leak. Rebuilding it is a good thing to do after sitting so long anyway I say thats your best route. Good luck with that though I hope all you need to do is rebuild your carb.:nanawrench:

I took the carb out tonight after tapping on it hoping it was a stuck float. When i was shaking the carb i could hear the floats bouncing. So not a stuck float. I basically took everything apart and cleaned it with carb cleaner. Three things stuck out to me. First, when I took the top off and accelerator pump went all the way up, so when i pressed it down it started to squart some fuel out of the pump jet housing(did not do that before). Second, the needle and seat seemed to be a little sticky but not to bad. Third, when i sprayed carb cleaner through one of the primary boosters it was possibly clogged!! I need to get a new top seal and i will try it again. I also noticed that when i took off the card the first time fuel poored out of it, but after i tried to start it and then took it off again there was not alot of fuel comming out of it. Now that i think about it i think it only came out of the left side....

I could use some advice on setting the floats. My s/n is 1400

Thanks for the help!

All tech docs for that carb are on edelbrocks website you can pull them from there. thats what I did. I am very pleased with the performance of the carb it really wakes up with just a little pedal. 74 Elko is right about the spacer, But on some manifolds if you run the spacer and an edelbrock carb it will hit the egr valve and you are still screwed. might look @ replacing the manifold while your going through all the trouble to me they are cheap enough.
