I have rust at the very bottom inside of my doors on a 1985. This rust is the worst at the rear bottom corner of the door. What is the best way to neutralize this rust?

You could try cleaning it up and applying something like POR15 (http://www.por15.com/) if the rust hasn't progressed too far.

But, in my humble opinion, rust is like a malignant cancer. If you don't cut it all out and then replace it with new metal it'll come back eventually. You may be better off replacing the door skins.

Removing the door (stripping it of inside parts) and having it media blasted (inside and out), and then using POR-15 is what I would suggest if the door is not in too bad of shape. I know of no one who is currently producing doorskins for 5th gen Elkys as of yet.

Sand it to bare metal, use a primer sealer , then repaint.

I think Goodmark is tooling up to repop door shells. They aren't out yet, I think they are out in the spring. There is a thread on this subject.

Maybe one of our ECC members who knows someone at Goodmark can contact them and find out if they plan on carrying the doorskins and inner doorshells soon for 5th gens...only God knows how long I've searched and waited to get a set of excellent condition doors...all I need is one lousy driverside doorskin.

Door interchangeability is coverd here. (http://elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=1214)

The front spoiler (air dam) can be purchased through Honest Charley Custom Components. (http://elcaminocentral.com/viewlink-1.html) They sell a fiberglass one and a urethane one. I would suggest you buy the urethane one. Don't forget that ECC members get a 10% discount too.

sand it down to bare metal, or media blast it

they use primer and eventually paint

finally drop some oil (old engine oil) inside the bottom of the doors

by different temperatures the oil will keep running, and keep the rust away, cotinue this job every two or three years

The elCamino store has bottom door skins for about $39.00. I ordered mine a couple weeks ago.

I contacted Goodmark just last week about the rumor that they were going to start carrying doorskins and inner doorshells. The good news is they are going to start stamping them out...the bad news is that it's not going to happen until the end of 2004! :x

Well, before you commit yourself to new doorskins, I'd at least check the doors out to see if they are useable. If they're not badly rusted, I'd at least try to save them. If they are badly rusted, then you'll probably need inner door shells also. And remember Goodmark said they're not going to start carrying them until the end of the year...and when we get to the end of the year, they'll probably say in the spring of 2005. I got some rust free doors from a boneyard, passenger door was mint, drivers door was badly bent...I removed the skin and straightened the inner door shell only to find out that no one carries doorskins...that was 3 years ago and both doors are still sitting in the garage. Unless you have big rust holes, try to save the doors at least till the doorskins and door shells are available. The doors on my Elky are so badly rusted that it's embarassing...the doors were the only body parts that rusted, the rest of the car is solid, the car was Ziebarted when new, maybe they skipped the doors.

After the doors are repaired, I would drill larger weep holes in the bottom of the doors and keep them cleaned out so water doesn't sit in side the doors.

called Goodmark today myself (12-30-04) still no firm time... guy told me they are lacking in experienced toolers etc... in Taiwan. Why they don't make them where they were originally (Mexico or Canada with NAFTA inplace beets me) price estimate was $350 for a full shell, time estimate was unknown :(

Could probably get a set of rustfree doors from the desert. Not sure what the shipping would cost but they probably would be clean
