: Another Edelbrock carb problem.....

I have taken apart, cleaned and replaced the gaskets in my 600 Edelbrock carb. Now it will idle fine but when i go to open the secondaries (85% throttle) it is really sticky and hard to open them up. Also, it backfires huge every time. Is there something wrong that i could have done when i took it apart.

Please help.

Thanks!

I agree. Seems there's something amiss with the secondaries. They're simple carbs so it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.

Now, on the design side of things, Edelbrock 4 barrel carbs (as far as I know) have no way of adding extra fuel when the secondaries open which often leads to a "bog" and if severe enough, a pop or backfire. So there's two design features that assist with this problem. One's an air flow restrictor plate that sits above the back two barrels that because of a counterweight won't start opening until the velocity through them is high enough to force it open. This keeps vacuum levels (signal) high enough to continue to pull fuel through all the proper fuel vents/openings. The 2nd is a well that feeds fuel to the secondaries. It usually works great at WOT, but has it's biggest challenge when the secondary butterflies are transitioning from closed to open. If it's not functioning well (no pun intended), the secondary fuel mixture will lean out causing bog/pop/backfire.

Next time you work on the carb, pay close attention to both of these areas and make sure it's mechanically correct, and that it's free of any obstruction and that the fuel path is completely open. You might also try to verify your fuel level in the bowls is where it should be.

Good luck.

is it stickey when its off the car???
check and see if its bolted down even..it could be too tight.

if your useing a thick gasket, its easy to get the base plate in a bind.:texas:

Holley carb's are JUNK, compared to Edelbrock Performer series!

what world are you from? I have never seen any race car use an edelbrock performer series. Edelbrocks parts accept for their manifolds are crap. They should have just stuck to what they are good at, intake manifolds

Just follow mnunn's advice he is spot on on the dissection. And for you other 2 --- all carbs are great if you know how to work on them, change jets, tune, etc.. And this is why I hate q-jets, cause I don't know them; but oh how the old timers will swear by them. And I envy them cause they can get those q-jets to purr... Good Luck

I've had Holley's blow out seals and gaskets after 100 miles. I've run the dog $&(! out of my Edelbrock on every car I've owned. I've never had a problem with Edelbrock carbs.

I agree too --got a holley fir a Bb 750+cfm i'd trade for a Eddy carb --never a problem with them over the years or their prediseter Carter--
