Got a factory 3-speed on the floor. On the lookout for a good used 5-speed so I can run the highway at lower RPM. LOVE the gearing in the 3-speed for in town! Went the 4-spd route with my '66 and had a blast. :D

Alan, I have a factory Saginaw 4 speed manual in a 5th Gen. Wasn't sure if you meant 3rd. Gen or 4 speed automatics. Jon

My 70 is supposed to have a four speed in it. I am not sure what is going in it yet seeing as it can complete without an engine and tranny. :D I got a good deal on a automatic tranny but no such luck on the four speed. So we will just have to see how things go when I start to work on it.

I now have all the parts to convert my 84. I'll be installing a Borg Warner Super T-10 when I finish the engine for it.

Mine currently has a 327 with a 4-speed Muncie, but that's only because I was a little rough on the original 350/TH350 combo in my youth. :sigh: And the Muncie has been rebuilt once since the swap.

I've got a 79 El Camino SS, Black with Black Interior, 4 speed, factory air, Bucket seats with original console, tilt, wheel...I haven't seen too many like it. It's got a 350 in it and right now I'm at about 430 hp. It's got a 4.11 rear end in it, so it's pretty fun to drive.

I'll be posting pictures before too long. Not to bore you all with details, but I live in Kentucky and a few years ago we had one of the biggest hail storms ever. The El Camino was parked outside when the storm hit and it was totally destroyed. I have already redone the engine and am currently working on the body. One of the pieces of hail hit the roof of the car so hard that I can't even sit in the car without the dent touching my head...It was unreal.
I hope to have pics soon.

My son's car is a 1978 SS, factory 350-4 speed. About 2 years ago we swapped out the saginaw for a muncie. There are some pictures on the photo albums in my signature.
Does anyone know for a fact why some A/G Bodies were delivered with a 10 1/2" clutch and some with an 11"? I've heard some "I THINKS", but nothing definite.

66 El Camino w/ 283 and Muncie M-21 4 spd. It had a Saginaw out of a Vega when I got it. With the Saginaw it ran out at 85 - 90 mph, The Muncie allows me to bury the 120 mph speedo should I so desire. I would rather have the 4 spd., I can rebuild the 4 spd. and install a new clutch for a lot less than an auto rebuild.

Thinkin about puttin a 4 speed in my 80. It runs like a hot rod now, I couldn't imagine it as a 4 speed. It'd have to be a close ratio, ohhhhhh and have the line lock ahhhhhhh and uhhhh ohhhh ahhhhhhhhh a hurst.

Tonuch1, and all the rest of the guy's.
i have to agree with the sentiments about the 4 speed gearbox.
my 73SS has the TH350, console shift.
i spent the better part of 40 years driving trucks with 10 speed, 12 speed, 13 speed, twin stick 15 speed and 16 speed combo's.
my 92 Silverado has a 5 speed, overdrive, which nets me about 21mpg on the highway, so I really like it for that reason.
I take my elky out a couple of times a week when the weather is dry and just cruise around town and the slushbox is a lot more convenient then a stick, so I'm glad it's there.
If it had come stock with the stick, I sure wouldn't change it.
In other words, I like them both. Each has its advantages.

I assume you are refering to an automatic trans. The turbo 350 (THB350)
that was common till the early 80's was a 3 speeed.
When they came out with the Electric Lock Up torgue converter's, the tranny was still a 3 speed but the lock made it feel like it was shifting a 4th time, when it reality it was only locking the torque converter to so it was not slipping when running at highway speed.
they later came out with the overdrive, (OD) tranny. I went back to trucking about that time, so I am not sure how they attained the OD unless the actually added a 4th gear.
If you take off and count the number of times the tranny shifts, you can tell if it is a three speed or four speed auto.
The original GM auto, was called a powerglide and it only had 2 gears.
They've come a long wasy since then.
Hope this helped.

Tonuch1,
I just bought a '71 SS 454 Elky With M22 (4 speed), LS5 and bucket seats...The 4-speed was icing on the cake. I have three other Muscle Era cars and all automatics...Always wanted an Elky, and this one I will enjoy for many years! I have also looked around and not many factory 4 speeds around. It has also been pointed out the combo of 4 speed with buckets is even harder to find. WMc :D
