: 1970 Rebuild
JCReynoldsIV 03-22-2009, 06:11 PM Well I am currently restoring my entire Elky and I want to make it the best it can be for the way it is, I have a 350 Small Block right now with an automatic transmission but I would like to put a four speed in it and I have a 10 bolt rear. My question is what can I put in the engine to make it run extremely fast, loud, and will make everyones heads turn. I am looking to buying a new intake, carb, cam, headers and whatever I can get, ohh and what kind of MSD ignition set up should I get and what kind of exhaust should I get too? I am wanting recommendations on how I can make this small block come to life! :)

mnunn 04-27-2009, 05:17 PM Sounds like you're a guy after my own heart.
Besides the tranny and clutch stuff, I'd suggest spending your "budget" in the following order:
Free flowing Exhaust (dual 2-1/2" all the way back s/be plenty fine for a 350)
Free Flowing Heads (2.02" diameter intake valves, 195 CC intake chambers that flow over about 200 CFM at .500" valve lift) Patriot sells some for about $900 give or take. Edelbrocks are a little more I think, but have a better reputation. Dart Iron Eagles and even the fast burn Vortecs are a nice choice)
Ignition upgrade (unless you already have HEI or better).
Increase carb CFM a little to match the head and cam specs.
Cam of your choice
Edelbrock Perf RPM Air gap Intake manifold
Depending on your R&P ratio and type, I may upgrade that too (unless by now I be broke).
Good luck.
dougs85 04-27-2009, 06:59 PM You didn't say if your 350 has been rebuilt. Better make sure the bottom end of that 350 is healthy if you are going to increase the HP with heads, cam, intake, exhaust etc.
11067 04-27-2009, 08:43 PM im rebuilding mine as well. and heres what im doing to make this thing a beast. its not hard either. get a .550 lift roller cam.get it bored to 355 ci.from there you get dome pistons and JE piston rings or both by JE. if you go to JEGS website, or if you can find them from somebody, that works too, find heads that are built and are capable of atleast a .550 lift. if you really wanna get fast and be different the way i am now deciding, then get fuel injected heads, a manifold and throttle body. mix the old and the new. it makes for repititious fast. and final, turbo. not supercharge, TURBO. if you can find heads that are cast, get them.aluminum is great, but cast will still hold just as well and you have less of a chance on breaking.one more thing, you wont turn heads cuz you'll be going so fast, their heads cant keep up. find a good tranny and a stand alone fuel management sys. and you wont have to worry about fluxuations.its all there all the time. and you can keep track of it. that might give you an idea, but if not, cool. it may not be the thing you're after.
Drop a LS1 or a LS6 turnkey crate in there. You won't go 1000 mph but you will get a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty on it. She'll be fast and sound great... :nanawrench:
JJLT1 05-06-2009, 02:52 AM what rear gears do you have now? are you worried about gas milage?
the right heads will make a big differance
dual exhaust ...i think its aginst the law not to...:poke:
it dont have to be loud to be fast,,,but you will get more tickets.:texas:

Ain't that the truth! LOL
I don't thnk anyone can really answer the question here till you have a budget, and the biggest part of that budget better be for HEADS.
For starters on head selection, consider the internal combustion engine is just a big air pump. The more air you move, the more power you make. HOWEVER,,,, be realistic in your goals. A serious 355 street motor that seldom sees the high side of 6500rpm will typically not need a head flowing much over 250-275cfm. On the street where your moving small amounts of air at idle and cruise, port volocity is MUCH more important than brute flow numbers. On the street, a driver, keep port size to around 195-210cc, and pick a head that will flow upwards of 250cfm. Your sanity will appreciate that advice.
A race motor on the other hand, seldom sees anything below 4500 after launch and is shifted in the 6000-8000rpm range. You can get away with a 220cc port, and a race 355 is not a serious motor till you get flow up to 300fcm, at .65" lift. You would be EXTREMELY unhappy with this motor onthe street in very short order. There intended for operation in the 5000-8500rpm range.
So,, pick a budget for HEADS only, then double it, then save to build a combination around those heads.
JCReynoldsIV 05-06-2009, 11:36 AM Ok thanks alot for the help! :) But yeah I am planning on getting new heads, but I'm not exactly sure if I want to get my engine bored out or not...I'm still debating...but heads are a definate that I'm getting and absolutly dual exhaust, but I also debating if I should go flowmasters or the way Chip Foose would go and choose Magnaflow. Everything is up in the air until I get home Saturday from college and finishing my last exam hahaha
texaselky 05-06-2009, 12:06 PM Well as far as ignition goes, I got a DUI from Preformance dist, looks pretty much stock but works so much better! On my 350 with .125 dome pistons I was having to run premium gas, Installed the new dist and a set of their Livewires, and my motor dosen't complain about the cheap 87 octane gas!
I just love my Flomaster 40's
