I have a 1982 El Camino my vehicle didn’t originally come with a Hood Light under the hood. I have since purchased one. The big question is which side of the hood does it go on?
The hood light is a reproduction and has a fuse built into the main wire ending with a metal C clip at the end. How does this hood light work?
Did this light attach to some sort of a switch mounted along the inside of the fenders edge? Or was there a manual switch located in the engine compartment somewhere that this light connects to? To where it was turned on and off manually?
It you have any photos of your hood light setup. I would love to see how it is connected.
Thanks

hello: The light should have a mercury switch inside, so you will have to be carefull to mount it correct. When you close the hood the light SHOULD go out. lift the hood it SHOULD turn on. Wire the light to a fuse 12 volt source. I hope this helps.

I believe most have the pigtail coming out of the harness on the drivers side close to the firewall by the brake booster and the wire being orange in color and hot at all times. Should not have anything plugged into it if you did not have a hood light originally. I have a 79 with the original hood light and it is mounted on the driver side and I have a 86 it is mounted on the passenger side both are original. All the hoods I have seen that do not have the holes drilled out for the lights have the dimples showing where the light would have been had it receieved that option. I will have to look to make sure but I think both sets of dimples show on the hood. If you still need any pics let me know I will try to snap some.

I see two sets of dimples in the lower portion of my hood. One set of dimples on the driver side and one set of dimples on the passenger side. And both sets match up just fine with the mounting holes on the light bracket. I tried looking for a pigtail wire that was hanging and not connected to anything. The only one I found was on the passenger side. It has a Green Looking Pigtail. Other than that, that's about it.
My new light has a built in-line fuse already. So it has a mecury switch? I noticed that when I would just turn the light holding it in my hand that it made a clicking noise like if there was something loose on it? But I guess it is that mecury switch that I hear moving around inside the light?

I looked on the 79 and the wire feeding it does not plug in like the one on the 86 we have so I guess your 82 would be like the 79. The wire from the light goes through the bulk head connector on the firewall on the drives side where all the other wires for the hedlights and so on pass through.
If you just want to see how it works before installing it put a bulb in it (#93) hook a jumper wire to the frame or body of the light and connect to negative side of a battery and hook your fused feed wire to the positive and you should be able to tilt it with your hand like it would be on the hood and see when it goes on and off.
