I have an 85 Elky 305 85,000 2nd owner. Love my truck but when head cracked I listened to people smarter then I, and bought a used 350 I am on fumes $$ it has mild cam and the heads are 487x, web says they are a bit better then OE. The 350 is 72 yr, cast# 3970010. I bought an Ebrock performer, But because this is my daily driver and really not a toy. I am having to go with Roch Qjet. Not by choice but by life, Fortunately my wife has a 2006 sentra(greatful for little things) This is my first swap ever !!
? can I use the plug hole a little higher up on the block for my knock sensor ? I cant seem to get the plug out of the corresponding spot 305 to 350 its the factory plug and it has not been touched in 37 yrs. I would love to just take it in and have a car genius do there magic but Work has cut hrs and u du what u hav to do. Thnx Pappy !!

487X are OE heads GM made them just like any other of their castings.
i had a set once they are one of the better smogger heads but nothing Hi Perf or anything like the 487 and others were.
roch q jets are great carbs they are all 800 or 850 cfm depending on the engine and year. and they are the most efficient on fuel mileage than other carbs, and are easy to tune because there are very few adjustments to make, and kits are cheap for them. and they support high horsepower applications.
the vacuum secondaries are the best, and Q jet throttle response is always lightning fast as well :)
the knock sensor actually isnt a big deal alot of the times i dont even run with it plugged in all it does is retard the ignition timing if it senses shaking/knocking in the engine.
if the hole you are talking about is not a water jacket hole and it is the same size hole and theads too then it would work
or any other hole on the engine you can find
or make a bracket with a threaded hole in it attached to the block as close to it as you can.
not real important though
on the 85 elky we have almost finished restoring totally(brand new paint, door hinges, dash pad, panels, visors, carpet, seat, everything replaced)
i dont have the knock sensor plugged in and am not going to,
as it was faulty and was retarding the timing and making it run crappy at idle especially.
the CEL never comes on and its totally stock original factory 1985 even the E4ME carb and all the sensors etc.
runs extremely strong and it purrs so smooth,
had the shop bore it .030 over and we got a 350 cam for it, i assembled it from scratch totally myself and broke it in one day last august without a hitch.
and the original 2004r trans is behind it.
stock exhaust now in real nice shape but going to have duals put on sometime in the future,
it runs at least as strong as a real good 350 engine
i did have to replace the mix solenoid in the carb because it was dead and was running super rich in limp mode when we got it and the engine was tired dead and knocking and smoking with over 200k on it
everything is back stock original and correct, every last clip and bracket, a/c, cruise, all the CC ESC stuff.
no AIR pump

good luck!
