: supercharge?
dabayelco 04-23-2009, 09:04 PM ok i have a 70 elky with a tired and old 350. its time for a new engine so i had two options. i have roughly $3,000 to work with so i was either thinking of buying a 400+hp 350 from year one. this is cutting it close and might need to wait a little longer for more money. the second option is to buy the base 350 from gm which is rated at 290hp, and later in the future slap a supercharger on it. can it be done? and which was is the best to go? if i do go with the base 350, then im going to do minor mods like cam, heads, and intake untill i have enough money for the supercharger.
CoyoteOn2 04-23-2009, 09:16 PM If you go Supercharger, you WILL NEED MORE THAN MINOR MODS, say almost a COMPLEAT motor Bottom end upgrade, just for starters. It is NOT just a bolt on and go type of modification. To put it simply, you would need an entirely different Motor. $$$$ wise, you will furthur ahead with the Year-One Motor.

Blue"68" 04-23-2009, 09:21 PM I am really trying to put my self in your shoes or whomevers when I read these post's. So here are my thoughts. A year ago I would have said Just buy the 400hp from yr1. But in this time of economical needs for the nation, there are literally hundreds of engines out there that some poor soul slapped 5 grand into & is a turn key engine. And they are having to sell it for 2k to pay their bills or even 1500. So If it were me I would look around and find me a STEAL, then take the extra and get me a new stereo or rims???? Remember this is what "I" would do.
CoyoteOn2 04-23-2009, 09:27 PM BLUE makes VERY good sense. Keep an eye open, you could very well score a 7 / 8 thouand $ motor for 3. I've seen them, and I'm sure others have also.

Don't play with me blue. I still dont know how this is going to pan out. Worst case scenario they dont fix it or give me monye, then I got $1500 of my own monye to play with. And with that I'm tempted to get a little ricer car as much as I dont want to. But first I got to see what going to happen with the insurance companys, As of now it looks like they're going to go to court.
Found this SS but it's to much for me.

CoyoteOn2 04-24-2009, 11:20 AM DON'T give up, hang in there, this will all pan out given some time. It may seem like forever, but that's ONE THING NO ONE can stop. Time just keeps ticking away. Every day I wake up saying
"Today is the day I will find my replacement El Camino, if not , then tomorrow."
ElkyHolik87 04-24-2009, 11:53 AM Thank you CoyoteOn2 (http://elcaminocentral.com/member.php?u=7010). That means alot to me. Some people are trying to kick a guy when hes down saying that I'm screwed. So any support means alot to me.
Blue"68" 04-24-2009, 01:47 PM I'm not playing, it can't cost that much to put it back together, if we try real hard bet we can put it back together for 500.00 bucks, only downfall paint won't match :yell:
ElkyHolik87 04-24-2009, 05:22 PM If your dead sirius so am I blue. The fame is bent though about a good 7'' of the tip of the frame is curbed and I dont know if it tweeked the rest of it. Also I need to see how this will all pan out befor I make some moves. Thank you so much though. I just checked it again it's more like a 3'' tweek
old_coot 04-24-2009, 07:26 PM If the frames not rusty, a frame straightener can get it closer than it was from the factory and its not really that expensive---I used to run a body shop and could get a frame straightened for a couple hundred bucks---probably a little more now but its definitely worth getting an estimate.
And for the original question that started this thread, I would recommeng getting a 383 and you won't need a supercharger and with what you save pick up a fuel injection setup and have the best option possible............Dan
Blue"68" 04-24-2009, 08:46 PM I wouldn't joke about that buddy. Yes I will help you. I offer my help to people all the time. I went up to oakland and helped a guy last weekend with his 65' elky fix his brake lights and blinkers, wheel cylinder and bleed brakes, and tune his holley carb. All for free. Because I like to do it, and not everyone can afford thousands @ a shop.. I think we are going to meet up again and fix his head lights. He is a member on here, but I don't think he gets on much I think his handle is Stubborn.. Anyways I like to meet people and shoot the s**t, I can't think of a better way to do it than over an old chevy. Not trying to hijack your post bro I will help you too so sorry If I rambled LOL..
CoyoteOn2 04-24-2009, 10:28 PM WHAT GOES AROUND --- Comes around is all I can say. TO SHAAAAAAAA.
Blue"68" 04-24-2009, 10:54 PM We gotta find you another car brother CoyoteOn2. :nanawrench:
CoyoteOn2 04-25-2009, 08:30 AM Guess I'm being to HARD on my self. I've looked at maybe 35 -40 in the last month, mostly they were jokes / junk. But I'll find it, and when I do, It will jump up and say, "I'M the one, TAKE ME HOME"
Blue"68" 04-25-2009, 09:23 AM There are ELKY's aplenty in my area and I am not actually that far from you. Should give it a look in Bay area and Sacramento craigslist's . I have perfected guilt and low-balling LOL, makes it easier when trying to purchase and make things go your way "not that it's something to be proud of". Good luck in your quest. I will say this after working on Gen 2 Elky's the simplicity of these make it so easy to work on, I am thinking of getting another. Maybe 63' or 64' Have a MA and PA car LOL. Anyway's hope you find one soon you must be bored..

Thats a rip off bro. did you see the C/L link I posted. About the 400 SB 475 hp for less then 2g's
dabayelco 04-25-2009, 10:59 AM i did but im looking for something in the area, nothing too far away. theres not too much up here in nor cal tho i think i might have to start looking down there too
toms84ss 04-25-2009, 12:47 PM Well the engine dabayelko linked to does have a warranty. You wont get one of those off craigslist. You wont get that much HP from one of GM's crate motors for that price. Plus if its local its easier to get any warranty work done.
dabayelco 04-25-2009, 01:32 PM toms84ss is right, the only thing pushing me away from craigslist is the warranty issue. im scared that i buy one and it just doesnt work and ends up being a waste of money and time
Lemmy 04-25-2009, 02:29 PM Just to say that it took me a almost 10 years to get my '70 Elky. I had that dream ever since I owned my first Elky, 17 years ago.
dabayelco 04-26-2009, 11:27 AM congats Lemmy! im really lucky that im only 18 and have had mine since i was 16! it was in rough shape but hey its getting there, its in the body shop getting ready for paint and now im looking for a new engine
