: Customized Hood
ElkySS 02-09-2004, 02:38 PM Might be the first time you've seen a customized 1967 Chevelle SS hood on a 5th generation El Camino?
I still need to adjust the pass. side fender and front fascia to better match this hood. I might have the hood re-sprayed, the shade of white if not a perfect match. I'll place this pic and another in my 5th gen members album entry.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks,
-dan

theelcaminofactory 02-09-2004, 03:10 PM Wow Dan, that looks really nice! Did you mold the sections of the 67 hood in? How about some info on how you did that. Man that looks good! 8)
ElkySS 02-09-2004, 03:16 PM I'm glad you like it, Mike.
We didn't do the individual "humps", we used a whole section of the '67 hood to save the "peak". I'll try to find a couple of "step" photographs taken by my friend, Bill Waxler. Bill use to own his own shop and he's a top notch body man.
nowukno 02-09-2004, 04:13 PM Man,That look damn!!! good!! Looks like a showroom car 8O
Caveman49 02-09-2004, 05:45 PM NICE! You know that's my favorite year chevelle, and oh by the way, I bought one new in 67, $3028.00 out the door, man to have it today!!!
What is Bill up to lately? I'd sure like to talk at him!
Another region 7 member here........
ElkySS 02-09-2004, 06:38 PM Bill's not really a computer guy, so you can call him at 423.843.3645 or I'll print any e-mails you might have and give them to him. I see him at least twice a week.
You can e-mail Bill at my e-mail address: ElkySS@att.net and he's more likely to get/check his e-mail.
Go Region-7!

86camino 02-09-2004, 06:44 PM that's clean did you have to cut anything to make it fit or what. i'm just curious to how much modifications you had to do.
Poltergeist 02-09-2004, 08:39 PM Very 8)
Tommy 02-10-2004, 03:37 AM Cool
ElkySS 02-10-2004, 11:56 AM We didn't cut any of the interior hood bracing system. We cut the hole in the hood, bent a flange on each side of the new piece, ground/cleaned a couple of inches on all edges, then slipped the approx. 2-1/2 foot square section from the '67 SS in under the flanges and the rear opening, used 3M panel bonding dual mix sealer on all upper and lower edges and used three temporary rivets and large clamps to allow the 3M sealer to dry. All the rest was general body filler and prep work.
Bill Waxler did say that if he ever did another of these hoods he would slip the front edge under the original hood and slip the rear edge over the original hood and fill the rear edge more. That would better match the slope in the front. The 5th generation hoods have a fairly drastic slope from back to front. The '67 hood is almost flat. We might have even cut a couple of more inches off the front of the '67 piece to help with less filler before getting into the more drastic slope of the 5th gen hood design. Notice how we cut some 45 degree pieces off the front of the '67 hood piece. This was to have a better area to work with around where the hood sloped and the peaks joined.
Ive not got some "during" project pictures posted in the 5th gen section of Member's Cars section. Third entry "ElkySS". http://www.elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album01&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
83choochoo 02-10-2004, 12:59 PM Dan your hood looks real cool. you guys did a awesome job it must have been real time consuming getting the hood to look just right.
ElkySS 02-10-2004, 02:13 PM Thanks, Todd. It did take some time. We'll see how the local show crowd likes it this season.
Now we're shaving the tailgate and tricking up some brake lights.
:-D
blackelk 02-10-2004, 08:51 PM sweet
ColdBastrd 02-11-2004, 07:43 AM sweet

ElkySS 02-11-2004, 08:42 AM Thanks, guys. Project pictures posted (3rd entry, ElkySS) click here: http://www.elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album01&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
eightysix 02-11-2004, 09:49 AM That hood and the elky are both cool. any chance you'll bring the car up to the St.Louis easter show in forest park. the people there would love to see this car.
ElkySS 02-11-2004, 11:32 AM Thanks, Justin! I drove this Elky up to St. Louis last Sept. for the ACES regional meet. It took "President's Choice". The Midwest Chevelle Club president was also a Monte Carlo fan, so the Choo Choo Custom's frontend really caught her eye.
My travel schedule probably won't fit in another trip to St. Louis this year. Hope you folks have a good turnout at your shows this coming car season.

70ELCO 02-11-2004, 12:45 PM I love the look! What a great pick for a little bit of retro look to go with a class act ride you have! Very well done as well as creative!
ElkySS 02-11-2004, 01:07 PM Thanks, Dave. The "trick" taillights are gonna' be retro also.
Kiraly 02-11-2004, 08:13 PM Daaaaannnnnng.......looks outstanding!!! :D
Oh man...now I don't even want to put the cowl induction replacement hood on mine....it'll look so cliche...lol
Mrapii 02-11-2004, 10:07 PM That looks fantastic. I thought about doing the same thing but after looking into it I decided it was way beyond my capabilities. Maybe some manufacturer will reproduce the idea in fiberglass so us regular guys can have the same cool look.
ElkySS 02-12-2004, 05:47 AM I hope some after-market parts people are reading our posts and decide to produce this hood for 5th gen Elkys. How about it Honest Charley (Mike & Joe), how about it Gaylords or Lauren Engineering?
ElCafreak 02-12-2004, 12:40 PM wait wait wait! I need to see the pics of that. Who has it and where is it? lol
thanx
ElkySS 02-13-2004, 07:10 PM The hood pic is on the first page of this thread. The taillights are in development. Will post pic when completed.

greywolf 02-14-2004, 01:28 PM Now we're shaving the tailgate and tricking up some brake lights.
:-D
Tricking up some brake lights?? I have this wild dream of cutting Chevy pickup tail lights into the rear corners of the body. Seems like very much the same shape, but the pickup is a little wider...
ElkySS 02-15-2004, 04:07 AM This is not mine, but someone's already done that:
http://www.rivercitycorvetteclub.com/images/90s_pickup_tl.jpg
Tommy 02-15-2004, 02:36 PM Someone on this site has done that. You could do some searching to see if you could find them.
Pro Street Garry 02-17-2004, 04:50 PM That looks great Dan!....
We did kind of the same thing..BUT..adding a 72 hood center to our 75. 8)

ElkyPete 02-17-2004, 05:05 PM Gary,
I've said this on ChevyTalk and I'll say this here "Stop showing that pohney Hood you did in that paint program" NOT! Just kidding like I did say that purple really looks good and the whole job so far is Killer.
Dan, I gotta say I like those lights and what you did with the hood. I like the lights better. Those are GM Truck lights aren't they? Man I have also wanted to do something like that.
Did you have to shave some of the tailgate for fitment?
supergerbel 02-17-2004, 05:33 PM It looks like it was originally intended to go onto your car. That looks so awesome that i think i might cry.
ElkySS 02-20-2004, 02:46 PM Thanks, Garry. I really like your hood.
Pete: That's not my taillights. I found the pic and posted it because someone mentioned they wanted to do late model GM taillights in their 5th gen Elky. I'll post my taillights when they are finished. I've got them about 1/2 way finished.
Update: My schedule won't allow me to work on the custom taillights for a couple of weeks, so I'm gonna' post a few pics in my members cars section. On each side of my rolled pan I'm using three 1963-66 Corvette clear backup light lenses with red LED bulbs. When I don't have my lights on, or my foot on the brake, it'll almost look like I don't have taillights. I'm also installing sequential turn signal controls.

ElkySS 02-21-2004, 06:23 PM I've posted some pics of the custom taillight project at ELKYSS: http://www.elcaminocentral.com/modules.php?set_albumName=album01&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
Tommy 02-21-2004, 07:15 PM Does that rear use your inner bumper? That type rear would be nice if it also protects.
ElkySS 02-22-2004, 06:40 AM We're putting a square tube brace/bumper behind the fiberglass rolled pan.
