: Soda Blast and Paint
hotcamino 05-12-2009, 06:14 AM Front clip is off, new motor 383 stroker, 450hp.
All new suspension, 12" drilled and slotted rotors, 3 piston calipers.
I think you got the idea, new and upgraded front end.
The front fenders and the rest of the car was Soda Blasted.
Now at the painter, I will be paying big bucks to have it done right!!!!!!
When painter finishes parts, I will be putting back together.

Primer and Sanding....Super Red GM paint ...soon...:smile2:
Lemmy 05-12-2009, 06:59 AM Wow, that's the same color that mine is. And that's '70 too. And currently on Florida, waiting for to be shipped! :You_Rock:
http://mursu.1g.fi/kuvat/1970+El+Camino/Ebay+ja+konttiasemalla/ there are few pictures. From ebay and container company that is going to ship her to me...
hotcamino 05-14-2009, 04:59 AM Lemmy, you have a project!
Will you be doing the work?
I did most of mine, but the final paint job I am leaving up to the pro.
The guy who is painting my Elco is known for his "custom" paint jobs. He is very particular about who, what and when he takes on a custom paint job.
No more golden brown...will be Super Red...Black stripes...and Black bed.
My wheels and tires are Corvette replicas, I think they are cool.
I have never been to Finland, I'll bet you won't need the AC, but will need the heater!
steelybill 05-14-2009, 12:31 PM I haven't used the soda blast, but a friend/customer blasted a WW2 trainer airplane with that stuff (Vultee BT-13) and the aluminum skin looked like new, with no roughness at all.
He was removing paint.
hotcamino 05-15-2009, 06:27 AM You are correct, no roughness at all.
The blaster doing mine ran out of soda with just a small area of the fender not blasted.
He put silica in the hopper and blasted the rest of the fender...yes, that small area felt like sandpaper!
The painter spayed some paint yesterday for the first time....I'm happy :nanawrench:
http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/hotcamino/100_7387.jpg
nomader 05-15-2009, 07:36 AM hotcamino I cant stop laughing every time I see you standing there with that wire harness. been there many moons ago
Carretera 05-15-2009, 01:46 PM I'm always looking forward to your updates, it sure is looking good. Was the elky staying at that hotel or just passing through?
hotcamino 05-16-2009, 04:01 PM I own the Motel. So I guess you could say it IS staying at the Motel (hotel).
We have 10 units with kitchens across the street from the beach. Singer Island.
Built in 1952, park in front of your door. No Bellman, no room service, and no tipping.
Free car wash (do it yourself).
Outdoor gas grille by pool.
Did you notice the paint room floor? It is pink, soon to be RED.
Ted Dubree 05-16-2009, 05:48 PM Looks kike the soda blasting does a super job.
steelybill 05-16-2009, 07:12 PM I was wondering about the clean-up after soda blasting as compared to sand. The sand seems to get into everything and some times it's hard to remove all of it.
hotcamino 05-17-2009, 07:39 AM When the Baking Soda particle hits the paint it explodes into DUST...The explosion is what removes the paint...Unlike Silica, Soda turns to dust and can be blown away with a little air. The dust on the ground is gone with the first rain...is that cool or what?
When I got the car home I wiped it down with phosforic acid. I don't think I spelled phosforic right.
I put rubber gloves on and soaked a rag with acid and wiped it down...about a half hour. The car is 300 feet from the Ocean and 3 days with no rust...no telling how long it could remain outside in its bare naked metal without rust forming.
steelybill 05-17-2009, 09:42 AM I'M gonna have the check with my buddy and find out if he still has that soda blaster.
I've used aircraft paint stripper etc before sand blasting, but that's a nasty job.
Thanks for the info:smileyb:
Oh yeah, I have the plans for a rotisserie, to roll the body around, and have a friend with a small structural steel business, who is gonna help me build it. It pays to have friends!! He does owe me favors though, since I do the inspections on his airplane for nothing
hotcamino 05-18-2009, 04:49 AM I hope that old expression "You get what you pay for" doesn't apply to you!!!!!! lol
I'm jealous, body off frame and a rotisserie...soda blasted...
Man, you are doing it right.
Post some pics when you get that rotisserie done, and when you get the body on it.
I hope you put some extra Hp in the Elky, you gotta make it "fly", your airplane friends will be jealous.
hotcamino 05-28-2009, 06:36 AM This is what it takes to make it smoooooth (straight as an arrow)...
BLOCK sanding...forever...don't give up. Prime again, sand, sand, sand.
I think I have spent most of my life sanding...I remember the time I put drywall on the ceiling and walls of my garage, then several thousand square feet in my house...not to mention my boat...sanding, sanding!
http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/hotcamino/100_7386.jpg
hotcamino 06-04-2009, 05:24 AM After all the sanding and prime-ing. This is what it looks
like painted. Very RED and SHINEY...

Lenny Carey 06-04-2009, 08:14 AM Hey Glenn , Glad to see you are progressing so well on your 70 . It was cool meeting and talking with you at Super Chevy a few months ago and we are all looking forward to seeing the finished project . Hope it will be ready for our next get together . I wish I had the talent you and 464elky have . What are your plans for the interior ?
Pa-elker 06-04-2009, 06:48 PM nice work on that '70!
hotcamino 06-19-2009, 07:10 AM Painter took a few days off...(clearing his lungs from all the sanding dust). He said he will put the first coat of paint on it Monday or Tuesday.
This pic shows the body after block wet sanding with 500 paper. It is starting to SHINE!
http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/hotcamino/100_7742.jpg
hotcamino 06-19-2009, 07:17 AM Lenny,
The interior is still in LIMBO. I've purchased at set of 73 swival buckets, they need refinishing.
I'm currently thinking black and silver. The dash is black and silver.
I have a relative in Plano Texas that has an upholstery shop. He does custom trucks, many of his projects have appeared in magazines. I would gladly drive to Texas and have him do his thing!!!!!!!!!
First, I have to put it back together after the painter finishes.
hotcamino 06-25-2009, 06:23 PM I won't be able to sleep tonight...
The painter wants me to come and help him move pieces in and out of the paint booth.
So, tomorrow, PAINT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:nanawrench:
I was there today and everything has been wet block sanded with 500 paper, looks good!:inlove:
I will be bringing camera.
dougs85 06-25-2009, 07:31 PM Now calm down before you have a stroke. We want to see the finished paint job. Know how you feel though. Pulling masking tape and paper off a new paint job is exciting and a great pleasure in life.
Doug

dougs85 06-25-2009, 10:13 PM Crap, Larry I was going to include part of a quote on your reply, but there so much jumble of colors and text size info I gave up. Anyway about what do I know about pleasures? Pulling masking tape and paper is almost as good as----what was I going to say? I forgot. Maybe you could clue me in.
Doug
CoyoteOn2 06-25-2009, 10:18 PM EXACTAMUNDO !!!!!!! LOL  Have one on me Bro.
steelybill 06-26-2009, 08:03 AM Regarding soda blasting, a friend told me that Harbor Freight has a soda blast rig now. I haven't been there to see it. It may be OK for small parts etc.
hotcamino 06-26-2009, 07:40 PM Painted!!!!
Monday begin wet sanding, then, buffing...

mgs72elky 06-26-2009, 09:11 PM Hey Glenn, looking really sweet. You've got to be pumped now, almost there.... Cool
hotcamino 06-27-2009, 05:24 AM Wow! Mark, you really have a nice ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looked at your photos, and I am courious about the bed cover.
How does it attach under rear window? I see two bolts, one in each corner.
Do you remove the bed trim piece under the window?
Does it keep the rain out?
What kind of material is on the top? From the underside it looks like plastic?
Name of supplier?
Thanks, Glenn (hotcamino)
464elky 06-27-2009, 05:54 AM Looking GOOD Glen! I guess you will be over the bridge all day Monday huh?
mgs72elky 06-27-2009, 09:14 AM Hey Glenn, The cover is made by Craftec, and is a fairly thick vinyl. What your seeing undernreath is a greyish fabric that the vinyl is bonded to. Yes, the header trim is removed and replaced with Craftecs header which has a C-channel that the tonneau slides into. It uses 2 existing bolt holes, but they are slightly enlarged. Then there's the two struts that require drilling 3 small holes each for the bottom brackets. When down, it's secured with 2 short bungee cords at each corner. While it may keep the majority of the bed dry, it's not 'waterproof' and would leak somewhat, especially at the front two corners where there are gaps. I can't say how much it would leak because mine never sees rain. I'm quite happy with it, no complaints. Hope that helps ya bud. Later. And... Thanks for complimenting my Elk....
PS- Craftec has a pretty good web site with a lot of pics and info....
hotcamino 06-27-2009, 04:59 PM Thanks Mark,
I called Craftec and they returned my call within minutes...they answered all my questions and suggested I ask for samples of the material before buying. They say the Black comes in a couple of grades.
I am going to Rino Liner the bed, but in the mean time I could have a really cool cover like yours.
Thanks again for your reply. DAMN, your Elco is NICE!!!!!!!!!!:inlove:
hotcamino 06-27-2009, 05:04 PM Neil,
Over the bridge, but not to Grandmothers house.
Stop by and check it out if you get a chance.

dougs85 07-15-2009, 07:45 AM Wow! Looking good. Did you ever consider RED? That thing must glow in the dark!!
Doug
kenrogers1 07-15-2009, 09:46 AM You do know that, for just a few extra dollars, you could have bought RED paint!
GREAT 'lookin El Camino!! The work you've put into it certainly shines through!! :You_Rock:
.............Ken
hotcamino 07-16-2009, 05:55 AM I brought it into the sunlite for the first time...
WOW is it RED !
The painter, Ron, told me to bring it back in about a month.
He wants to go over it with a foam pad and put a GLAZE on it.
Is he crazy?
I think he has lots of PRIDE in his work. Thanks Ron.

464elky 07-16-2009, 12:58 PM Looking awesome Glenn! I got to get over there and have a look.
mgs72elky 07-16-2009, 11:16 PM Real nice Glenn. Sharp lookin Elk....
hotcamino 07-28-2009, 06:38 AM I replaced the power steering box (old one had a leak), purchased NOS wheel well trim, and attached, purchased Craftech bed cover, (I recommend this cover to all El Camino owners, it assembles very easy, and fits perfectly) and I think it looks great! I painted the inside of the doors with POR 15 to protect them from future rust (currently there isn't any). I am installing keyless door locks, and will be installing power windows in the next couple of days.
I saw a 70 Chevelle that had a Magnaflow Stainless Steel exhaust system, WOW, it looked really nice.
I will be looking into an exhaust system as soon as I get the glass in.
hotcamino 08-19-2009, 07:47 AM When I looked underneath for exhaust routing, I decided I need a new gas tank, because everything else is NEW. I took it out, guess what, the oringinal build sheet on top. It is torn and tattered, but 60% intact!
Got a new gas tank and sender. Lots of dried mud, fired up the pressure washer, and got dirty and wet.
Will be painting underside prior to putting in new gas tank
Picture of me getting dirty and wet.
http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/hotcamino/Undersidepressurewash.jpg
hotcamino 09-24-2009, 04:04 AM Installed all new SS brake lines while jacked up drivers side. I will be using a temporary exhaust system to run engine and tune, also, to get to the muffler shop guy that welds SS.
I decided I better put the LOKAR shifter in before the exhaust, more room to move around.
I don't have seat in, so I am guessing front to back position, the left to right I lined up the trans lever with the LOKAR lever...had to cut floor...see pic...anyone else done this?
http://i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww75/hotcamino/Shifterfloorcut.jpg
hotcamino 11-08-2009, 06:06 AM Recent picture...rear 3qtr view, glass just installed with trim. Will tint soon.

steelybill 11-08-2009, 07:59 AM Lookin' good Glenn:smileyb:
Challenger 11-10-2009, 12:20 PM Soda blasted my Elcamino before paint. It was messy, but the only way to get the body really ready. You'll have a nice/solid car.
hotcamino 11-22-2009, 05:55 PM Last post by me was Oct 29.
Have some new pictures to show...
I drove it out from under the tent today, cause I have brakes! Well, sort of...brakes not too good:???:
They need to be bled again.

melissadunagan 11-22-2009, 08:47 PM Hey Glenn That is one very nice El Camino. I do have one question, what is the emblem unger the El Camino emblem on the front finder. To me it looks like Texas. Would you take a close up picture of it?
Thanks
hotcamino 11-23-2009, 05:47 AM Ferret Lady,
Howdy...y'all...
Very good! You noticed.
Grandpa Daddy purchased it in Oct 69 in Dallas Texas. My Brother-In-Law brought it to Florida in Nov 2005. So it was born and raised in Texas, retired to Florida.
I was in Mesquite in August, and parked next to a new pickup that had this Emblem.
WOW, the perfect final touch for the Elco. (Found them on e-Bay).

L Samino 11-23-2009, 08:43 AM gorgeous ride! Wish I had one!

fixittroy 11-23-2009, 12:03 PM Very well done, I like the detailed work you put into it.
I'm planning to start a frame-off on my 66. A guy at the body shop I use said I should check into having it plastic media blasted. Anyone ever had that done?
