CoyoteOn2 05-22-2009, 10:17 AM WHOA -- Calm Down Turbo ---
No one said anything negative, if for some reason that struck a BAD note for you, well what can I say ? It surely was not meant to get your dandruff up. To be very honest with you, I HAPPEN to like the effect that Stripe gives that Elky, But I'm OLD SCHOOL, and I'm very fond of the WEDGE EFFECT,
lowered front look, and I think that just adds to it. YES, that means I dislike the Wagon Wheel Look, as well as the ground dragging bagged look as well. THAT'S ME. And if your the type that likes them, that's great also. Just my 2 cents, cuz what do I know? :dontknow:lol
theelcaminofactory 05-22-2009, 10:38 AM I'm very fond of the WEDGE EFFECT,
Soooo...what are you saying, you like the effect of a wedgie? You 4th gen guys truly are strange! :dontknow:

CANTED 05-22-2009, 05:26 PM Thanks go out to strkpr for the Motion history, good read. I have always admired their work. The 69ish Camaro they build now with the 540 reminds me of Sam Jackson's wallet in "Pulp Fiction". Also to Mike for the laugh's, as usual.

I resemble that remark! :patriot:
MrCryptic 05-27-2009, 08:12 AM :P i did say it looked like the starsky and hutch stripe but i didnt say i disliked it! lol, the Tarino is one of the few 70's cars that i do have on my list of cars to own one day! im not specific to GM, or Ford, but i just like the car itself, and that myfriend is one slick looking Elky! not a huge fan of the side pipes but they do look good
Pa_IndianRider 05-28-2009, 01:36 AM first of all i guess you guys own el caminos but dont know anything about GM HIGH PERFORMANCE shops or BALDWIN MOTION from the 60's and 70's . ........... i have a second gen baldwin motion camaro clone and my buddy liked the paint job and the side pipes and the cragars so we incorporated them into his el camino:smileyb:
As soon as I saw the first picture I thought "cool idea" for an El C ..... looks like a "Motion" graphic.
I LOVED those days .... every performance car magazine whose pages were filled with cars like those put together by Motion and other "hot rod" dealerships .... especially the most well-know "Yenko Chevrolet"
I only live about 15 minutes from the building that housed the original YENKO dealership. Had a good look at many of the now famous SUPER .... Camaros, Chevelles, Novas and Corvairs.
But I always like what Joel Rosen did at MOTION.... he was not afraid to take his cars "one step" further by adding over the top accessories like header/side-pipes. BIG hood scoops, BIG tires... etc
Ahhhhhh ...... Those were the days my friends..... we thought they'd never end ..... but they did!!!!
I love the crome side pipes. I was considering the same. Maybe something off an old Sting Ray....:You_Rock:
Viet_Vet 05-29-2009, 08:15 PM side pipes will burn your leg getting out--wife hated them on the Vette:dontknow: Just so you know up front:poke: Glenn
Pa_IndianRider 05-30-2009, 03:36 AM I have always liked the 4 into one Corvette side pipes which from the pictures you have attached are what you appear to be using.
I prefer the look of a LONGER set or by adding a piece to make them longer.
Fortunately the 4 into 1 pipes you have DO look good .... even at the shorter length.
I really feel the aftermarket Vette-Length sidepipes (with screen mesh heat shield) that often find their way onto cars look out of place .... a look I would rather "do without".
I am looking foward to seeing the project when it's done.... When you get a chance how about some pics of your Chevelle????
MOTION PERFORMANCE..... a TRUE High Performance dealership..... Starsky & Hutch????? HA!!!! Talk about a "generation gap" of understanding ..... or should I say mis-understanding.
Here's some more "Muscle Car" history:
After MUSCLE CAR ERA came to an end...... the '70s saw the decline in high performance cars due to higher insurance premiums and tighter EPA emissions standards. Yenko didn't have much to work with so he began to modify Chevrolet Vega (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Vega) with spoiler, turbocharger and design graphics. Due to difficulties with EPA certification, he only sold the modified Vega without a turbocharger. Instead, the turbocharger sold separately at the Yenko dealership & dealer installed.
In 1972, Yenko stopped selling modified cars and began publishing a performance parts catalog from cosmetic modification to engine modification. One of his notable product was the ZL-1 engine and he produced them under permission from Chevrolet.
Once the EPA put the kiss of death on hi-performance cars no TRUE performance cars where made from 1973 on!!!
After a few years of selling just "factory DECAL cars" (all look and no go) Yenko Chevrolet (after their factory imposed move from Canonsburg, PA to a larger NEW facility on RT 19 - McMurray, PA) offered the last of their list of "Yenko prepared" (hopped up) performance cars.
In 1981, Yenko made his last modified car...... the IROC Turbo Z Camaro. He added a turbocharger to a 350..... Only 19 of these cars were sold.
Don sold the Yenko Chevrolet dealership in 1982, which had been family owned since 1934.
Then in March of 1987 Yenko, along with his three passengers, died in his Cessna while landing into land near Charleston, WVA. The landing was hard, causing the aircraft to bounce and Yenko to lose control. It then hit a dirt bank, fell into a ravine and crashed.
With my plans to add a Lauren Engineering IROC Z front nose I could add some Yenko trim .... which could raise a "few eyebrows" (an El Camaro) just like I am sure your Chevelle & your buddy's Elky does at car cruises, etc....... I have an "original" Yenko dealer insignia plate and might do some subtle Yenko inspired stripping.
"Those were the days my friends.... we thought they'd NEVER end" .... but they DID !!!!
Caminokid 05-30-2009, 06:39 AM You know. The days of kick a$$ cars are gone. You can get a SS Monte Carlo...with a 6 banger....a Impala SS with 4 doors and a 6 banger. What happened to ours cars? Pontiac is no more...Olds is no more. The El Camino is never coming back. What do have to look forward to? Nothing.
Pa_IndianRider 05-30-2009, 07:37 AM You know. ........Pontiac is no more...Olds is no more. The El Camino is never coming back. What do have to look forward to? Nothing.
I wonder if the new Pontiac version of the El Camino will ever make it to the production line? from what I have heard.... once the "dust settles" all that will be left of GM will be Chevy & Caddy.... : 0 (
I'll still stay with the older cars for FUN and the new ones for dependable daily use. Although I would not mind having a new SS Camaro to tool around in.... guess an LS6 Vette would be OK as well..... : < )
motionwannabe 05-31-2009, 10:51 AM hey guys good to be back. we went on our honeymoon to the Poconos. had an awesome time. yes, it is sad that the day of bad ass muscle cars have passed and that so many so called gearheads have no clue of the original high performance shops. MOTION, YENKO, NICKEY, GIBB, DICK HARRELL,BERGER are all the originators of true high performance. this el camino was meant to be a tribute to Joel Rosen and the PHASEIII Supercars built by him , Billy Mitchell(world products) Baldwin Chevrolet, Dennis Ferrara , Joe Cancillieri, Paul Kaufman, and marketed by Marty Schorr. most of Motions paint work was done by Gary "The Local Brush" Kupfer and Automotion. This el camino was set to be a black knight clone by my friend Keiths dad Barry before he unexpectedly passed away after a short fight with cancer. The car is also a tribute to him. He was an avid Motion performance fan as well. The side pipes are 63" Patriot 3-1/2 TUBES. The hood is an L88 that i grafted and molded myself following the advice of a friend that owns a fiberglass shop.I painted, striped and did all the body work myself. The body had no rot just dings. It was sandblasted by Barry before he passed. just sitting outside for a day this car draws people into my garage to see it. I'm proud of how it turned out. I plan to send Joel Rosen pics of it upon its completion. As for my camaro I'll post pics after i get done painting it again.:nanawrench:
Pa_IndianRider 05-31-2009, 06:43 PM hey guys good to be back. we went on our honeymoon to the Poconos. had an awesome time......
WoW.... we got more in common than the knowledge & love for the old days of the SUPER muscle car dealerships..... My wife & I also honeymooned in the Poconos.... Stayed at Ceasar's Pocono Palace....our room had a GIANT Champane Glass jacucci & a private swimming pool????
I was debating between an using an L88 hood or a Cowl Induction scoop.... always like both equally well. Ended up getting a pretty nice eBay deal on a slightly used HARWOOD cowl (bolt-on 4") Maybe one day will end up with a fiberglass hood but for now the scoop will do just fine. Being retired & on a fixed income limits me some so for now I'm more inclined to spend money on getting the engine/tranny swap done.
Orginally my Elky was bought just to be a "cool/older" daily driver... good enough to use JUST as purchased.... HA!!! That plan didn't last long.
I really didn't think my "hot rodding addiction" would cause me to do soooooo much to this "G-BODY" ..... afterall it's hardly one of my favorite El Caminos....
I mean if it was one El C's of the "Muscle Car era" or my FAVORITE (59 or 60) ... I be doing all it all without a second thought.
But what happened .... after driving our '80 Elky for a few weeks BOTH me & my wife (a piston head/hot rodder as well) said "hey I really like this car.... let's fix it up" So here I ... or should I say "we" go again.
motionwannabe 05-31-2009, 08:08 PM we stayed at split rock resort. and we went to the bushkill falls and a few other places.
I got these elcos for my dad and we ended up with a ton of parts more than i know what to do with.
at first i really didnt like the 78-87 g body but it grew on me.
My dads has a muncie 4spd and a 65 vette 327 365hp. we then had this body sitting there with all the stuff i got from my buddys dad after he passed and my friend Jason wanted it and he told me make it one of a kind . so i did. It sounds awesome with the side pipes and the L88 just looks awesome.
I'm gonna start trying to sell these extra parts again. My buddy Jason and i plan to take pics and post parts soon. i have everything from interior to fenders, hoods, header panels, tail gates, grilles, rear and side glass, wheels, a few carpets, dash pods, inner fenders, headlight bezels ,marker lights the window trim and some lower body trim. i'll post more pics of the car as it gets finished:beer:

Hey Wannabe.... looks like a "Motion" to me.... right down to the 70's style wheel/tire combo that was the only way to go back in those days (L60's on 10 inchers poking out of the rear fenders).
We are still NOT sure of what color to paint our Elky.... started out thinking of a metallic candy-like red .... now we are leaning towards a bright red (non-metallic) similar to the red on your Camaro. What color is it???? Looking for a red with NO ORANGE in it.... still have plenty of time to decide.
I have LOTS of work to do before I can even start getting serious about painting it.
I have new rear panels to install, southern doors to prep & install, a rear rollpan to finish (with Vette taillights) and hopefully a IROC front nose.... and almost forgot .... the Harwood Cowl Induction scoop onto a stock hood. ( It's a bolt on but I am still thinking of BONDING it onto the hood what would you advise ????? )
PLUS (the first & most important) the SBC engine/5 speed swap..... which I hope to do the first part of July ..... whew!!!
If I was a betting man I'd bet I'll never have even most of these things done this Summer. Not to mention ALL the other "minor" goodies I have planned for our street/strip El "Camaro".... after seeing what you've done with the Motion-look on your projects I am re-thinking a lot of things.
Will have to see you a Keystone some Saturday soon to "compare notes"!!!!
BTW.... the "drag strip" weather report looks good for BOTH Keystone (Pittsburgh Raceway Park) & Thompson Raceway Park in Ohio. If all goes as planned we will be leaving EARLY on Saturday morning to get Thompson, Ohio by 9am or so (the start of time trials). I can hardly wait. Are you sure you'd rather not to to the Gasser Reunion????

Ha!!! These old eyes can still spot MT L60's a mile away!!! Looks like we could spend hours "sharing" our love for these old cars.... Wish I could afford a fiberglass hood ... but as you can see I have PLENTY of other things to spend my "fixed income" checks on... LoL!!! It's on the "list" in addition to MANY other "goodies" ..... I'll NEVER get our '69 C10 gasser done at this rate!!!
More later.... got some yardwork to do.... gotta to "git 'er done" to free up my weekend for the Thompson trip.... John
motionwannabe 06-02-2009, 03:07 PM i went to a hod rod show in cumberland maryland a few years ago it was pretty cool. i would bond your scoop on it looks so much better that way. i sent you a pm and explained about the cowl induction and if you need help with bonding it let me know:beer:
Pa_IndianRider 06-02-2009, 03:39 PM Wannabe.... just sent you a PM.... thanks for the tips & help with the "bonding" offer. Back in the day I "tried" to bond a few scoops on different cars and they always ended up cracking. Both thru my lack of skill & also the bonding products (remember BLACK MAGIC to name one...ha!!!) were very poor compared to the products available to us today..... Have a good time at the dragstrip....
nitroxracer78 06-02-2009, 03:53 PM I really love the exhaust and the paint on that Elky. It's making me rethink my future restoration.
Pa_IndianRider 06-02-2009, 04:17 PM I really love the exhaust and the paint on that Elky. It's making me rethink my future restoration.
I have ALWAYS leaned towards the street/strip look.... both the muscle car & pre-muscle car eras. I have never been into the resto look or the newer "lowered" look of today which is why I like the MOTION - LOOK of Wannabe's cars.
One of my other projects (on the back burner for now) is a '69 Chevy short wheel base stepside C10 that I am building for nostaglia drag racing..... it will have a "straight front axle" raised frontend.... ladder bar suspension ..... one piece fiberglass frontend .... shortened wheelbase ..... engine setback..... 5" chopped top etc.... those were the days .... my kind of wheels....
nitroxracer78 06-02-2009, 05:31 PM It's true. I really like the Pro Street look of some of the muscle cars.
I'm might want to put a side exhaust like wannabe's exhaust.
That truck sounds nice. I've wanted a '78 Ford F-250 for a tow car.
motionwannabe 06-02-2009, 06:36 PM the sidepipes on the elk are PATRIOT brand 3-1/2 inch 63"long the ones on my camaro are HOOKER SUPER COMP SHOW TUBES part number 21063HKR. The 63 inchers look really good .... the shorter ones (Corvette) look like they "don't belong" .... no matter how you mount them.... :dontknow: over the years I have learned that if you cannot afford to do something right... don't do it at all.
motionwannabe 06-03-2009, 04:32 AM yeah i agree with that. i have a buddy that has a 27 model t roadster for sale and the guy he bought it from rigged up a mustang ll front steering and suspension system to it. the guy called it a HIGH BOY. I think he was the high boy when he built it sits about 36 inches off the ground and the thing looks like some kind of bulldozer blade rigging:dontknow: he could have bought a nice frame for half the price of the 1/2 inch steel he wasted on this
Pa-elker 06-03-2009, 05:46 AM agreed, when i moved from Colorado, i had to sell my 58 Willy's jeep, that i restored, what a fun ride that was, it was that or the el camino, couldn't haul them both, ,,,no brainer on that one!
motionwannabe 06-04-2009, 04:33 AM i have a 41 dodge power wagon at sometime i may restore or maybe just sell. right now i have my dads 81 ss el camino my 77 camaro and my wifes 75 f100 and my buddys 80 z28 that all need finished so the old dodge is going on the back burner for quite a while:neutral2:
Pa_IndianRider 06-04-2009, 07:08 AM Yeah... I know what you mean .... I addition to my Elky project I have a C10 gasser I'm building.... two CB 750 Hondas .... one I'm turning into a cafe racer & the other to a hardtail 60's chopper .... a mini chopper to use at the track & camping .... and a custom frame shovelhead (110ci stroker) and a Suzuki bobber..... all of which are like yours .... on the "back burner" for now.
I am going to concentrate on the Ekly which as you know will be having a lot done to it this Summer. As soon as the engine & 5 speed swap happens I will be starting on the body work. I'm probably going to just put it all in "black suede paint" which will make it easier to do one body panel at a time and still have it in one color for the Summer. Plus I am going play around with graphics/striping on the sides & hood to see if I like or not. Gonna be a busy Summer.
Have fun at the drags on Saturday.
motionwannabe 06-04-2009, 07:15 AM graphics huh? i have a black knight kit for sale. if you would be interested i make you a deal on it:nanawrench:

I am going to do side & hood strips similar to the sYc (Yenko Super Camaro) along with various Super Sport emblems from the '60's.
I also plan to add a Lauren Eng. IROC front nose which I think will be a nice custom "tribute-like" look for our Elky.... an "El Camaro"

motionwannabe 06-04-2009, 01:01 PM i used 65 el camino emblems on my dads and 73 chevelle ss grille tailgate and fender emblems. the yenko stripe would be cool:beer:
motionwannabe 06-04-2009, 03:38 PM Pa IndianRider, did you ever see the gold modified 78 el camino drag car at keystone? he was there the last time i went down

I'm thinking instead of having the Yenko S/C font inside the side stripes.... I'll use the '67 Chevelle Super Sport emblems .... I might have to widen the rear section of the stripes for the emblems to fit "inside" and look in proportion.... I think it'll be worth the effort.

Also have a pair of the older style "SS" emblems that I'm going to also use .... somewhere.... somehow.
Just love all the old emblems of the past.... also have some SS 427 hood scoop emblems..... and here we go again!!!!

Pa_IndianRider 06-04-2009, 04:10 PM Pa IndianRider, did you ever see the gold modified 78 el camino drag car at keystone? he was there the last time i went down
Yes I did.... it ran low 13's .... sounded better than it ran. It looks good from 30 feet .... make that 50 or so!!!!
We went into the pits to check it out.... it must have 50 lbs of body putty on it.... cracks and uneven bodywork everywhere.
motionwannabe 06-04-2009, 05:15 PM yeah your right it looked good from afar but it was far from good. it sounded great i guess 13s isnt too bad considering none of the equiptment was that outstanding. as for the yenko stripe i think i would extend the wide to about a foot before the side window . you know what may look even better for the emblem you are using? how about yenko deuce stripes it would give you rhe width you need and still would be recognizable as yenko. just a thought:beer:
