: 74 hood hinge springs
AEmedic 05-25-2009, 02:33 PM I am in need of a set of hood hinge springs for a 74. I have heard that many of theones for sale are too weak for the heavy hood of the 73-77.
Does anyone know where to find a good/quality set?
steelybill 05-26-2009, 08:29 PM The hood hinges/springs are the same as a Chevelle/Malibu. ( same hood) You may have to get some used ones from a place like Chicago Muscle Cars or maybe S&S Classics, or Dixie Monte Carlo Depot etc. You can Google them for phone numbers etc.
74elco 05-26-2009, 10:08 PM I would def try your local yard look for elco or Chevelle/Malibu. I think you might be able to even use a pair off of a truck the same year. What happend to yours? Did they break or were they removed? If you want new ones cuz there old and grimy i would sujest just cleaning them up yourself a wire brush and some paint can do wunders for stuff like that. But thats just what I would do cus im a poor car guy lol I should make a poor car guys club. ohh and Good luck with your endeavor I hope you end up getting what you need.:nanawrench:
AEmedic 05-27-2009, 07:10 AM Thanks for the advice, I am looking for a new set because mine are rusty and are too weak, making the hood very hard to open.
steelybill 05-27-2009, 07:41 AM I doubt you will find a new set, but give it a try. Get online on Google and you may turn up some.
steelybill 05-27-2009, 07:09 PM I doubted you would find new springs, but I was wrong:???: Anyway S&S Classics has them.....19.95 for the pair.

DONE DEAL DONNY 05-27-2009, 07:27 PM I had a 74 and I remember seeing my wife hanging on the hood trying to pull it down. Feet off the ground, just not enough stuff in the butt!
I oiled them after that!

Lucky the hood didn't bend instead. Seen that happen a lot.
Someone said the springs were rusty and weak and made the hood hard to open and that doesn't sound right. Weak springs would make the hood not stay up.
Sounds more like the hinges are ceasing up.:dontknow:
steelybill 05-28-2009, 10:13 AM Oiling hinges (all of them) frequently is a good idea. I bought a new Olds 88 in 1955, and when it was 3 months old, the hood bent when I tried to close it. The factory fixed it, but it's a lesson in lubrication.

It is hard to open due to the weight of the hood, it also does not stay up without a prop, but that goes without saying...
steelybill 05-28-2009, 07:40 PM The phone number for S&S Classics is 1-866-654-2948.:poke::smileyb:

OldChevysNeverDie 05-29-2009, 06:00 PM Just my 2 pennies, but you do not just pull them down, you have to push back and pull down. Yes, oil them bad boys!!! If ya gotta paint 'em, be careful not to go too thick. I prefer WD-40 or penetrating oil to loosen 'em up then a drop of 3 in 1 oil during an oil change to keep them moving.
Does anybody know the name of the surface treatment that protects the metal without adding thickness? Not paint, not powder coating more of a passivation process or Japanning. It has been a while since I had to have product treated.
Black oxide? Parkerizing? Great for frames and brackets.
