I am looking at a 1979 GMC Caballero. It has a 400 smallblock that was rebuilt less than 1000 miles ago, an edelbrock 4 barrell carb and th350 trans. The body is in really good shape and there is no rust. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/1200505121.html is the craigslist add. In case that doesnt work you can copy and paste this http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/1200505121.html The car is as clean as it looks and the interior is in good shape. I think I can get him down to 5000, what do you guys think? Thanks. I'm new to this but have always wanted an el camino.

Hi,
Welcome to the club! It's a good looking Elko. Price is about right. The only thing I was not happy with was his term(fresh motor) Mine came with a fresh motor and I still don't know what that means. Also he said new oil pan gasket? A (fresh) engine should have a (fresh oil pan gasket)
It could be just me but I think I would want a little more details on the (fresh engine)
just my thought

I've seen a lot worse for that money but like Glenn says Its "how much do want to give for it". Also I don't trust these half a** mechanics . Mine was freshly rebuilt......but it was done wrong. so now I;m buying a new motor for it. Good luck

Thanks for the advice guys, I really appreciate it. And donny, I had the same thoughts of the oil gasket and that. The guy who has it now recently bought it himself, but then later found a 50's panel truck that he wanted more and is selling this. I am going to get the number of the guy he bought it off of (was a father and son project) to try and find out more of what the deal is with the "fresh" motor. Also I was trying to find HP numbers and I saw that the 400 only has 175 HP but 305 ftlbs of torque, does that sound correct? It does have headers and a different fan (I would switch to E-fans), and the larger newer carb. I'm just wondering what it is about these motors that is holding them back so much. I plan on removing the cats since it doesn't need to pass emmissions in my state and putting on a more free flowing exhaust.

Do you have a mechanic who will be straight up with you? And will the guy let you take it and have it checked out? For that much $$$ you want to be carefull.
