I have just purchased a 1966. This is my first El Camino that I've owned. The interior had been removed by the previous owner. I'm not sure what is supposed go on the wall behind the seats. I have looked for replacement carpet, etc on the internet restoration parts sites and by looking at many pics but I am still not sure what is supposed to go there. I'm not making a original resto so I'm open to any ideas. If anyone would have some good pictures of what to do I sure would appreciate seeing them or let me know where I could purchase carpet/? for that area or any other ideas. Thanks for the help, Dale

Don't know about that gen, but the 4th gen has a thick piece of jute insulation there, about 5/8 " thick, with a black covering, that resembles thin carpeting. I think it's up to your own ideas if you don't get more info. Thick insulation will cut down on road noise etc. You could insulate it, and cover it with vinyl, like Naughyde etc That' the plan I'm using, since I tore mine off for restoration......

I have a '65 and I was trying to think of something that can be very useful...

1. rifle rack

2. built-in ice cooler

3. compartment for spare parts or camping supplies

These are probably dumb ideas. I am still brain-storming; and I don't think having a rifle rack would be allowed.. especially in California. I like the photos of the sound system though.

Thanks for the pics. I was thinking of doing something similar so they definitely give me some ideas. It appears that from the factory they didn't much with that area which makes it pretty much a free-4-all.

Buzzsaw,

The area behind the seats of a '66 El Camino is pretty sparse. I have a restored '66 and the area behind the seat is pretty plain. Although mine was updated with carpeting, a correct restoration should require that behind the seat is no carpet, interior color paint (mine happens to have been sandalwood metallic - gold, in other words), a spare tire with jack mounted behind the passenger seat, and a jacking instruction label affixed to the paint. I can send you pictures of mine, but as I said, mine was carpeted at some point.

Thanks,

i made a speaker box behind my seats, seems like alotta people do it. and plenty of room on my 4th gen, have 2X 10''subs and 4X 6.5'' 3 ways, plus have my amp mounted in the middle. few other i have seen, a guy made a holder(peice of 6'' pvc behind the drivers seat to hold his bed cover. seen fire extenguishers mounted right behind the seats right under the window, one guy had porn cutouts(like 200+pictures across the back wall on a 5th gen that looked like it was laminated on. was really cool looking but wasnt very appealing at the ''family'' car show

At a local surplus/salvage shop I found a tool pocket for the back wall of a pickup that has all shapes and sizes of pockets for carrying tools and stuff. It was sized for a full size pickup, so I had to trim a few inches off each end to fit. That's actually a useful accessory, if you always carry some tools anyway. They won't rattle around loose in the smuggler's box.

Thanks Brent.
Pics would be great. I've searched the net and no one seems to really focus on that area. I've been checking out the local car shows but not to many El Camino's.

I think the majority of people either try to go with speakers or want to go with speakers. At least that's what I want to do.

I sent you a PM.
