Its an '80 , Just a v6 for now... Its a dieing v6. Tranny is dieing , Flywheel is being eatin up pretty badly by a ****ty starter.... the damage has been done... And this has now been turned into my goal...

I just went over 100k on it , and its progressively been getting worse.... So ive been saving up for abit...

Now, I have a 267 sitting in my garage.. But i'd like to keep the v6 in it til it dies , or til ive bought engine and etc...

Because id rather not change out my dash and loose my dual exhaust for right now.. Dont wanna thrash it around and make some bs rigs.....

So , I venture to you... My fellow El Camino brothers and/or sisters..... Throw me the things i should invest on..

And , i ask , please go easy.. I work a ****ty job.. I get ****ty pay , for ****ty hours.. And i do as i can to get by.

Thing look mint. You got a gem here. Well if you want you get a 305 witch were in the El Camino's originally. The most popular swap would be to put a 350 in there since it will slip right in and you can do sooooo much to the engine like bored or stroke it. They can make easily 500HP

Trey,, first of all, i'd like to praise you on a wise decision to own an El Camino, most folks your age are into a different type of ride, where / how did you gain your appreciation for elky's? anyhow, that's part of the beauty of elky's; your options are numerous, and with the limitations you presented, it may come down to simple timing, what is available when you have the funds,, but yes, try to go with a v-8, the 305 and 350 will do you right and still leave you with many options to build upon. have fun and take pride in your wisdom!
btw; very nice ride, even though it needs help :nanawrench:

Congrats on choosing a good clean Elky to drive.:nanawrench:
Since you don't have a lot of $ to dump into a hi-power engine, I would suggest going to the local junkyard and buying a good used 305 or 350. You can usually get a good one, especially a 305, for a few hundred bucks. The cheapest option would be the 305, since demand for them is next to nil, as most end up yanking them in favor of the 350. Still, you can get decent power from a 305 while you save up for your dream motor.

Well....

My father has always owned an 84 Caballero .. Which is just the GMC version... Same ****
It has the 305 in it... Its got power.. But ive never really like his... So i really dont quite know.

AND! I actually owned an blue '80 elky , had a 267 in it... Really REALLY responsive for just a 267..
And i was planning on buying that back.. So i would have both.. Both mine and my old ones body are in pristine condition.. The blue ones paint job is just wack... horrible choice of words... Wack is just wack.

I also wanna buy a set of cragars for it... My current rims are starting to rust no matter how hard i try to keep'em from it.

Welcome nice Elky--You could just change the ring gear on the flywheel and tranny ?? you knew that i'll bet --they (GM) have lots of speed gear for the 4.3 lt v-6 and you can buy them new from Government motors pretty cheap??--Just a thought--Me i'd save up for a new ZZ-4 with 355 hp myself--Glenn:poke:

350 hands down, and even to get someone else to do a stock rebuild on one is about $600. 305 has absolutely no power :(

I know your talking about the drivetrain but I would make sure the entire suspension system and brakes are in good shape first. :cruch:

I have a 305 and it seems pretty responsive with lots of torque, but above 3500 RPM is doesn't have a lot of horsepower. If I were you, I'd go with a 350. Also, go with a 700R4 transmission. Then, make sure your differential is good.
Next, make sure your brakes and suspension is good. Mine had horrible shocks when it hit 102,000.

Then go for the fun stuff. Nice stereo, wash and wax it, and have fun!

I would go 350 or bigger unless you got a 327 laying around somewhere. Far as the 267....well Its a good door stop. Not trying to knock what you have...just wouldnt use that motor. 350's are still cheap enough to find.

and welcome to the board!

That's a nice looking car, I think you should fix the crappy starter problem with a crapy Jappy starter because thats all your gonna get now days. Once thats fixed than you can work on dealing with the flywheel. Dude you got a nice looking car. Put nothing but your best into it. She's a classic and will reward you in your pride. Get it running right again no matter how long it takes.:nanawrench:
