hi

I own a 1974 elky
I have a problem with the parking brake cable...
Mine is only guided with one support, and don't know how the exact route.
Is it supposed to be underneath or above the exhaust ,underneath or above tranny-support...
who can tell me wich hardware I need and how the cable is routed??
perhaps someone has a diagram or so?

tnx

I assume the one support that you refer to is the flange plate where you adjust the back cable. There should be a wire type hook in the outside frame rail on the drivers side, behind the trans support. On the passenger side there should be another hook in the side frame rail and a hook in the trans cross member so that the cable is supported through the turn to the right rear wheel. The cable goes over the exhaust and under the driveshaft. The cable from the pedal inside the car goes over the cross member. Hope this helps.

tnx for reply

I meant by the support the cable hook on the passenger side..
So I assume I'm missing the other two...

Can you tell me if the other two are of the same type/lenght, so I can make those two myself??

tnx

hi

I also don't know if my cable is the original, so could someone please measure the lenght of the cable( the longest, I think it's called intermidiate-cable)

tnx

The two that go on the passenger side are not the same as the one on the driver side, assuming you have the correct one on the driver side, but it really doesn't matter. If you make 2 for the passenger side similar to the one that you have, it will work. You just get the correct adjustment with the bolt through the flange.

can someone please measure the lenght of the hooks, I only have the passenger side and want to order 3 new ones, since The cable is in bad condition,I have to order anyway, but the supplier needs to know the measurments...

It occurred to me today when I was at the hardware store that, although it wouldn't be stock, you could get some turn-buckles and open the ends a bit so that you could hook one end in the frame and one end over the cable. They come in all sorts of lengths and diameters and since the length is adjustable, it would be an easy way to solve the problem.

Boy, I need to clear this up. I gave some information to another member in some pm's a few days ago, but the info is not here. I guess I thought it was you. So, here goes. There is one hook on the drivers side that hooks into the side frame rail (under the rocker panel) behind the trans crossmember. It's about 6-7" long. There is one that hooks into a hole on the top of the passenger side of the crossmember that is about 5 1/2" long. The third one hooks into the side frame rail on the passenger side behind the crossmember and is thinner than the other 2 and is about 9" long. The cable from the firewall goes over the crossmember. The intermediate cable that hooks to that cable goes over the exhaust pipes and under the driveshaft. If you use turn-buckles as mentioned above, you'll be able to get more than enough "infinite" adjustment to have the cable tight and the parking brake operative. The actual length of each hook is not critical as far as operation of the brake goes; it's the routing and the lack of binding spots that matters. Since the cable will rub the floor pan near the rear wheels, make sure that you have a straight shot from the side hooks to the brake drum and that you don't get bound up on the oval boss that is in the floor pan inboard in front of the rear wheel. You'll see what I mean when you look under there. I hope that this straightens this out.
