Noticed the other day that my drivers side door has been keyed!.. must've been in a parking lot somewhere lately.. man i hate those guys.. anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it?? this thing goes up and down and up and down more than half of my door length.. thank god thats all they did... do they make good kits that fix these things??? my car is a 97 gm truck color.. that may make it easier to deal with but the key is so deep i might have to layer the paint or even use filler..

Fill me in..

If it's a solid color, it's not a big problem, even if it's clear coat. If it's metallic, this idea won't work so well. Get a pint of laquer in the right color. Thin with some retarder or very slow thinner about 60% paint to 40% thinner. Use a number 0 touch-up brush to fill the key mark, of course after removing all wax, dirt, etc. You may have to do several coats to fill the scratch so be patient. After it is well dried, take some ultra fine wet or dry paper on a flexible block with soapy water and sand very gently and I do mean very gently, to smooth out the touch-up until it is even with the surrounding surface. Then buff. If you're careful and patient the scratch will become invisible. I did it on my the right quarter of my 97 T-bird which is clearcoat black in 1998 after I clipped my barbeque grill in the driveway, and the scratches are still "gone". If you have a metallic color, you can try this method but you have to sort of pick the metallic out of the paint and very gently dab into the scratch rather than use a brush stroke, but it will not likely be invisible as it will be with a solid color. Good luck.

Man, I hate to hear that. It's a crying shame when some "punk" will do that to something you have worked so hard on.

It sounds like that you are going to have to take it to a body shop. If it is a metallic paint, it is almost impossable to repair without sanding it all down and then repainting. If you are really picky about your paint jobs then you will have to get it repainted.

I had this happen to me on a new car. It really makes you mad.

Good luck.

If the scratch is only in the clear coat its an easy fix. If they managed to bit into the metal I'd suggest a body shop. If its only in the clear coat then use a medimum polishing compund then a fine one then clean off the grit and wax as normal. It will remove those scratches in the clear very well.

The new finishes are better than the old single stage finishes they can be fixed pretty easy if they don't get past the clear coat and lots of time they don't.

In trying to repair the scratch by compounding you need to know how much clear is on the vehicle. If you can feel the scratch with you finger nail and it is on the orginal paint then you will not be able to compound it out. The clear coat on orginal paint is very thin. If it is on a repaint then you will have a better chance fixing it. But then you have to worry about compounding too much of the clear, making it too thin and then sun will get to it.

That is true and I think that none of the El Caminos actually had the B/C C/C paint jobs from factory.

Its a good point though about Factory Finishes. They spray in Mills of thickness where a body shop or Indipendant painter will generally lay down many coats of clear, depending on the desired effect and designs.
