I need to replace my shifter on my 4 speed. I Would like to find a Hurst Comp Plus shifter. I have read Hurst no longer makes one for the saginaw. Any one know what the old part numbers were so I can search the web. I also read somewhere that a with a Hurst you do not have to Lift Up to shift into reverse. Is this true?

Thanks JJ,
I see shifters listed up to a gen 4 but nothing about a gen 5.
Anyone know of the discontinued Hurst shifter, part numbers, ect. ?

I've had three different Saginaws in my 78 Malibu this spring.

The first one came out of a Vega. It has two grooves around the input shaft signifying a 3.15:1 first gear. The Hurst Competition Plus that I had bought at a flea market bolted right on to a factory '81 Malibu 3 speed Saginaw shifter mounting plate that I had. I modified some linkage I had to fit. The trans had bosses on the back of the tailstock and the shifter plate mounted between these bosses and the two tailstock bolts on the driver side. The tailstock casting was knotched out on the driver side to clear the plate. The deep first gear trans worked ok with the 2.56 posi rear gear I had. However one burnout took out the spider gears in the rear and I then swapped in a 3.42 rear that I had. Then first gear seemed to low.

So I swapped in number two Saginaw. It was the more conventional 2.52 first gear. It has one ring groove around the input shaft. It had the bosses on the driver side of the tailstock. However it was not knotched out and I had to shim the plate out at the bosses and file the holes at the tailstock bolts so that the shifter would clear. When you put it in reverse there is a stiffer spring you compress as the shifter goes to the left. However in reverse the selector pin pops out of the side of the shifter and was hitting the tailstock. I finally got it to work but the trans was hanging up going into second.

So I had a third 2.52 Saginaw trans. I think it was from a 66 Chevelle and it had a factory shifter that mounted to the crossmember. It had no bosses at the back and was not knotched. I mounted the fatctory to the Malibu crossmember with a custom bracket but the shifter kept hitting the floor because it was mounted back farther and under. After two days of fidling with it I finally used the plate mount from the three speed. Then I wrapped 3/8 " threaded rod around the tailstock to mount the back of the shifter plate. I've made a few test runs and I think it will work although it looks pretty scruffy.

Perhaps this is why there is some many shifter options.
