I don't ever remember seeing a '61, '62, '63 El Camino. Were any made in those years??

You are correct . No El Camino made in 61-63.

I will check my book and see if I can find a reason.

There was a guy around here years ago that had a homemade 61 Impalamino! It was a pretty little thing! GM should have made them!:inlove:

The chassis that were used on the 59/60 were dicontinued. 61and up no chassis were suitable.

Interesting! But weren't they always built on wagon chassis'? They made station wagons in 61-63, right?

59,60 were built on wagon chassis.Production was stopped until 64 when GM debuted the chevelle/malibu which the el camino was based on.They began production on the chevelle and el camino mainly to go against fords falcon and ranchero.

Actually the nova was up against the falcon. The chevelle was up against the fairlane. Rancheros were built on falcons so chevy had the advantage in the larger chevelle based el camino.

Use your imagination. It may be a good thing that the Camino was postponed till there was a more suitable platform. Not that the 60-63 carts can be spectatular (the 61 bubble top is one of my favorites) I just can't envision how to make an appealing El Ecmino out of it.

61 wagon

The 62 wasn't much different as a Camino platform IMO. (but this is a great example of how great a wagon can look)

by 63 the full size wagon had a close front 'look' to the 64 Chevelle IMO and mayby that's what revived the thought of "hey,, we can do it again with the Chevelle wagon"

My guess is the 61 -62 cars used a enclosed drive shaft tunel and that funky "X" frame. Probably something similar in the wagons, but don't know that for sure.

Regardless, at least they didn't 'rush' things and pick some stupid platform for the next generation of El Camino. Can you just imagine how different 'OUR' world could have been............

You know Larry I never really liked 'em either. But now when you see one or even an early 60's econoline pickup, they look kinda cool!

Bobby, You got a point.
The last Show I went to in Mesquite had one there, & I found myself looking at it rather closely. It was truly a Time Capsule.

So 59-60 2dr and 4dr wagons had different chassis'?
wagon, elky, 2dr sed, 4dr sed, 2dr HT, 4dr Sport Sedan------------ALL THE SAME FRAME--------for the year, there are differences by the frame manufacturer, some have boxed rear sections---some have 'C' channel rears------100% interchangeable-------My 59 is now perched upon a 59 2dr sed BelAir frame

the 59-60 ElCamino used the same quarter panels, base floor, tailgate skin, rear bumper brackets as the brookwood 2dr wagon and the sedan deliveries.
The front portion of the roof is the same as a 2dr sedan/wagon----the rear of the roof is a shortened version of the 4-dr sport sedan.
A good portion of the rear floor in the Elky was shared with the Sedan Delivery.

This pretty much runs hand in hand with Fords Ranchero----Never did see a full size Ford 2-dr wagon after 59-----but the lots of 2dr wagons in the Falcon, and later the Fairlane.

Even back then ---GM was counting pennies--------The 59 2dr Oldsmobiles even used the same doors as a Chevy-----with just an additional sculptured piece bolted to the door.

All of the 59-60 bid GM cars used the same windshield for any given body style.
Many shared all of the glass.

58-64 full size frames are all "essentially" the same. Minor differences in the rear suspension or the addition/subtraction of a couple of body mounts.
