Hey, I live in california and i have a 86.It will not pass smog because it has a edelbrock 2101 manifold and a 1406 carb. Does anyone know if the dmv will request for a smog test only or if they will ask for a smog check?
Does any know the difference between the two. What should i do? :?

I know that Cali is tougher than most places. Here in NC we have a smog test & the visual check to see if it has all the equipment that it came from the factory with. That's why I still have factory manufolds. Most of my stuff is there but not working. 8-)

I'm no expert on California smog checks/tests. But, after looking at the Edelbrock website it appears that both your intake and carburetor are listed as 50-state street legal for all 1980 and earlier General Motors V8s. Since you don't fall into that catagory, I think you're S.O.L. If I were you I'd be looking around for an stock 86 intake and E4ME Q-jet.

Boy, am I glad I live on the right coast. :-D

I believe that you may be failing because the Edelbrock Performer manifold you have (2101) does not have the ability to mount/install an EGR valve. You need Edelbrock Performer #3701 which does. Double check with the techreps at Edelbrock on their website. Keep in mind that all the other pollution devices must also be in working order. Lets face it you live in California where the most stringent automobile anti-pollution laws exist and unfortunately the states where the rest of us live sooner or later follow California's lead.

So if i put the 3701 on and the stock carb that is a em4e that should make it pass.If i have flowmater mufflers on it do you think it will pass?
thanks again

That's a start. You'll have to get an EGR valve also. I would install a new O2 sensor, and are you running a catalytic converter(s) if not you probably won't pass. There's no guarantee, especially if you have badly worn parts in the engine like rings, valves, you still may not pass. All components of the emissions system must be in working order...and I believe that in California that any device missing or tampered with is cause for failure. I don't know whats been removed/unhooked/not working from your engine concerning emissions equipment. But one thing for sure, you've got the wrong Performer intake on it. I found this out when I bought the same manifold off Ebay...the one you have will work on a truck/car that wasn't manufactured with an EGR or on a vehicle in a state thats less stringent on emissions.

The egr is one of the main things they look for. Your mufflers should not be a problem if you have cats. also.

thanks one more question where does the wire hook up to that is coming from the senors from the exhaust manifold.does any one have a picture
of a stock motor in a el camino with no air filter on it, so i can fix what is unhooked? thanks for your help

It will be a purple wire coming from the harness in front of the carb.It should have a black single pin connector . that how it was on my 84 .86 might be different though.
As for reference pictures.I would try cardomain.com search everyones 5th gen photoalbums caminos, malibus, and wagons too. That is how I did it when I didn't know where something went.lotsa surfin' for answers.HTH
later.

do you guys know if i put headers with cats will it still pass smog?

Jon, as long as the engine hasn't got badly worn parts, it should pass the "sniff test" with catalytic converters, BUT Californias emissions requirements are so strict, you may not be allowed to install headers. Stock exhaust manifolds are part of the emissions equipment, that's what those air injecton tubes are on them. The O2 sensor is also in the crossover pipe. There are headers that are made so that air injection tubes can be installed and also the O2 sensor. However I'm not sure if CA. still considers this as tampering/disconnecting emissions equipment. I would contact CA's EPA or DOT to see what you can or can't do, before you go and start spending money on headers. They may have a website with info on this, do some investigative research. I'm also sure that there are CA members here that have come across this problem also. State EPA laws vary by area within the state also, I live in Illinois, in a rural area, if I lived approx 1/2 mile south from where I currently live, I wouldn't even be required to have my cars emissions tested.

So, where do you find emission parts? Which websites? My 1980 SS has the emissions, but, pretty much, all of the lines and plastic parts are falling apart.

any auto parts store has most of them.im also am getting some of the parts from the pick a part. 8)

I wouldnt worry about the EGR too much.. I just went through the emissions deal and visual inspection. I have a dual plane weiand manifold w/ no egr mount. All you gotta do, if you dont mind making your engine bay a bit ugly, build a SMALL aluminum bracket (if you have alum mani), screw it to the egr, and tack weld it on the manifold.. All i had to do, and it passed fine. Just rip it off after :D. As far as a carb, i have an aftermarket carb that passed fine, but im not in cali ;/

These headers are street legal even in CA.
