Hard to say until you find out what broke...could be the speedo itself, speedo cable, or speedo gears in the trans...shouldn't be expensive at all if you do it...even if you have a shop do it, it ain't gonna break the bank. I suspect the cable, that's the weak part of the 3...they get old lose the lubrication and break...did you hear any weird behind the dash noises prior to the speedo not working any longer...like a scrapping or squeeking? You could also check to make sure the cable didn't come loose from the trans.

If it just quit, chances are good it's a bad cable. There are other things that can cause it, but I would check the obvious first.

i was driving it then i came to a stop after i started accelerating, it reached 20 or so MPH then went to zero so the cables sounds like the culprit. does the El Camino Store sell the cables?

Does it have cruise control? If so disconnect the cable that goes through the firewall to the speedometer. Take a reversable drill ( Drill in reverse) connect to the cable and have someone observe the speedometer while you are operating the drill. If you roll down the window and really stretch out you will be able to observe the speedometer. No cruise control disconnect the cable at the tailshaft of the transmission driven gear housing, connect drill and observe speedometer. May have a broken cable. Next remove the speedometer driven gear housing (3/8 wrench I believe) you will loose a small amount of transmission fluid. Look inside to see if the drive gear is in allignment with the driven gear housing hole. There is a small spring steel retaining clip that holds the gear in place, sometimes they will brake or move out of place and will cause the drive gear to not make contact with the driven gear (speedometer gear). I hope this is of some help, I have gone through this mess myself. I think I had to remove the tail shaft housing to re-install the spring steel retaining clip.:dontknow: Go to NAPA they sell repair cable kits, about $10.00

well i took off the cable that goes to the transmission and i found that the orignal transmission was a manual trans, so it has the manual transmission cables ( which is very short probally about 10-12inches long and the transmission that is in it now is an automatic) that connects the transducer to the other part of the cable which leads from the transducer to the speedometer we have looked all around were i live and i cant seem to find a cable about that size to fit it does anyone know where i can get one?
