Hello, just joined because I am at a hurdle in restoring my 1976 Elbino. A 400ci Vortec is mated to a hopped up 700R. The trans mount sits too high. I've scoured the net including crossmembers.com which has good stuff but not for the 4th gen Elky. I'd prefer to purchase a crossmember and get to wrenching rather than fab one. I can't be the only one doing this conversion. Anyone know where I can get the right crossmember for this application? Thanks.

I've got a 700R4 behind the 396 in my 74. It mated to the factory crossmember just fine except we had to drill 1 hole on each side because it's farther back than the TH400. Do you have the correct transmission mount?

The crossmember fits fine, I drilled one hole passenger side to align it with the frame holes. It almost seems Chevy evisioned this swap! I'm using an Energy Suspension universal mount. I agree the mount would be the easiest change. But where do I find a mount 1-2 inches shorter.
I'm not one to work harder than needed. The first half of last year was spent trying to find a mount. Maybe I haven't found the right source. That is why I am a member of ECC!

It's been a long time since we did mine, but if I recall correctly, we used the same mount that we had under the TH400 that we replaced. Might have had to adjust the holes for the trans a bit.

Make one if you can't locate what you need. Measure the transmission algle to about 2 1/4 degrees measure the size and cut a piece of metal to fit. It doesn't have to be flexable. You'll feel it a little more in the paints but it will not be a problem. It could even be aluminum stock.

I guess the regular 700R4 mount is too tall?!? Then you could also just move the mount point on the crossmember easy enough.

If there are no differences between the "A Body" (1973 ~ 77) and the "A Body" (1978~1982) then that would probably fit. Both are "A" bodies but I think there is a difference. That member looked exactly like the one I have from G-Force and it was on a 78 Bu or Monty.
