Does anyone have any information on Suffix Code CEO78297 ? This engine is in my 68 SS with an engine code of 3969854, GM 8, and an intake code of 3883948. I'm really puzzled. :?

Since 1968 GM has used the suffix code "CE" to identify a replacement warranty engine, any CID, small or big block.

Hey! Thanks a lot there, Springer. That solves one problem, now I just need to find out if I have a 402 CID or a 454 CID from the information that I have accumulated so far. Engine code 3969854 is related to each and the intake code 3883948 is a 396 CID code.

You are right, Ray. Casting # 3969854 was used for 1972 402's and 454's. I'm still working on the CE078297. You would think that if the intake was for a 402, and they replaced the engine, they would have gone with a new 402, but a 454 would be nice for the same amount of work! I'm sure you don't want to take the heads off and measure the bore! :?

Springer,, your private message did not come through. Sorry This motor runs too good to start teardown, lol It needs a serious tune up and some dress-up, that's it. I havent pulled the valve covers and checked head numbers because I don't want to replace the gaskets. 8) I just wanted to know about matching numbers for 1968. I sent it up on the lift today and found "very solid" floorboards, a small transmission leak, and a wheel cylinder about to give trouble. The body and interior need work but but it has SS Vin # and co-oberating badges. Thanks for the reply!
