Well, transmission(only untampered original thing in the car) went out. It starts and works in first, but just won't switch to second anymore. Tried doing it manually, won't work, just as if it was gone. Gonna bring it in sometime this week, anyone have any idea what i'm in for?

Bring your checkbook and be prepared for a shock. Most transmission places get $1200-1500 for a complete rebuild and a new torque convertor.

I talked to my friend, he has a 87 camaro with the same transmission as me, got a complete rebuild, cost him 750, i'm gonna try the same place he did

Try checking the vacuum line going to the vacuum modulator on the transmission. I had mine slip off of the modulator one time and it wouldn't shift out of first until 35 mph! I thought my tranny had gone too, but the guy at the tranny shop suggested the vacuum line, and low and behold, thats what it was.

A soft parts rebuild is cheaper than an all out replace everything rebuild. Soft parts rebuild is basically bands and clutches, seals that sort of deal. It is more than likely that you center seal has gone bad. How does it do in reverse? Slow to move?

I would say that since your not hearing a grinding sound then its a pretty safe bet that it all soft parts. Your Spraig and other hard parts are probably fine.

My guess up to about 850 at a good honest Transmission place. I am not sure if that would include a new Torque converter but it should, its a must if you offer a guarantee.

Anyway you can buy a good Transmission (350c) and converter for less than 1200, unless your talking about a 700R4 and those could go up to around 1300 for a good tranny with some enhancments.

My 76's 350 was $750.00 with a mild shift kit and torque converter and core, my old one.
My 80's 700R4 with lots of performance enhancements and converter was only $1,050.00 including tax. Transmission Masters is where mine came from. I didn't have a trade in for the 700R4 either.

Okay. I have been doing tons of calling around, There is one place i could get a tranny put in cheap, but its a 200. not the overdrive one. A guy brought it in to have it rebuilt, and then dissapeared and never paid for it.
So the shop told me they would install it for 250 bucks, mainly because right now they are just stuck with a transmission that they put money into. Problem is, i have a 350 tranny, think the swap is possible? or no.

And my transmission goes reverse just as it used to and makes no grinding noises, just won't shift out of 1st gear. If i go like 15 mph i can cruise at low rpm's, lol, but i would rather walk.

But anyways, what all is needed to switch a 200 into something that had a 350? i know you all say a 200 is a crappy transmission, but i have almost no money and just need it to be working again for me to get around to places i need to be. What do you all think about this?

Well, I agree that a 350 tranny is a much more desirable tranny than a 200 but when you "have almost no money" sometimes you just have to go with what you can afford at the present time and hope things will get better financially for you in the future.

BUT, before I committed the $250 to the trans. shop for the work I would make sure they give you a written guarantee for a specific time or mileage amount on it and also make sure they don't hit you with extra charges for anything else they say they needed to do the swap. Things like a longer driveshaft, shorter driveshaft, tranny lines, tranny mount, etc.

In other words, make sure the $250.00 amount is all inclusive of everything thats needed to do the swap. That way, you'll know what the ACTUAL cost really is. Just my opinion!
