: mufflers?????
crocboy22 11-03-2009, 12:41 PM Have my 1st El Camino (1970). Having Hedman Headers installed and was wondering what some of you have for mufflers and if your pipes are running straight back or crossover.
I want it to have that hot rod rumble but I don't want the neighbors down the street to hear them and I would also like to enjoy listening to music while I drive without being drowned out by the mufflers.
Please help with feedback and/or experience.
aharbin1992 11-03-2009, 01:18 PM on my 72' elky i ran flowmaster 40 series it has that hot rod rumble it really depends on whta kind of engine u have and cam in ur engine i have a 355 with hooker long tube super comp headers and a edelbrock cam and when u give the throttle it will rumble pretty loud
crocboy22 11-03-2009, 02:42 PM Basically stock engine. Only add on's are Edelbrock manifold with Edelbrock 600cfm Carb. Hedman Headers.
Tuggy24g 11-03-2009, 02:43 PM screw the muffler just go straight pipes!:nanawrench:
CoyoteOn2 11-03-2009, 04:44 PM You will be pleased with the Flowmaster 40's or their 44's.
Installing an "X" or "H" pipe in your system will help to balance
and equalize the pressure / sound as well as to eliminate most,
if not all of the POPPING sound when you decelerate.
All so, I'd run 2" or 2 1/2" pipe all the way to the Rear, it will
help to minimize any drone or resonance inside the Cruck.
skinyfisher 11-03-2009, 06:17 PM Flowmaters "DELTA 40" will give you the 40 series noise with less inside cab noise than the straight 40 series if that is to much than go to 50 series that will tame things way down..
SoCal Elk 11-03-2009, 06:52 PM Super 50 (SUV) 2 1/2" in/out is what I chose. Fairly quiet idle but retains that "tinny" Flowmaster sound with headers, still has a satisfying "muscle" sound when you get on it. Friendly to the neighbors.
I've had 40's= couldn't get up even a slight hill in my neighborhood (with a 3200 stall) without being obnoxious.
elamott 11-03-2009, 06:55 PM I have a 400 in my 78 and I put on the 50s series Flowmasters with 2 1/2 inch pipes all the way back. I like the sound but the drone is too loud for me. I do not have an H or cross over and I am talking to the exhaust about that now. I am hoping that will help.

crocboy22 11-03-2009, 09:15 PM Are Flowmasters the best brand to get? Seems that is the brand everyone is mentioning.
dougs85 11-03-2009, 11:01 PM Flowmasters are not the best.

Tuggy24g 11-04-2009, 06:16 AM seems like one of the top choice is still the good old Glasspack and Flowtech are top ones to get
woody31 11-04-2009, 06:21 AM its a matter of personal preference, i like flowmaster 40s but thats just me i run 3in in and out with turn downs at the axle and love the sound. i rarely play my system id rather listen to my motor hope this helps woody out:texas:
mgs72elky 11-04-2009, 10:44 AM I've got a pair of Hooker Aerochambers on straight duals. I went with them because of so many complaints about the Flowmaster 'drone', also they outflow them bigtime. They're not loud, but a fairly deep rumble at idle, and real decent sound at WOT. Mine are axle turndowns, they'd be even quieter run all the way to the back. Sound really can't be described though. Hooker has sound clips on their site, as well as Flow and a couple others. Chevelle Tech also has a thread with quite a few sound clips. Good luck.
Maintenceman 11-04-2009, 02:22 PM a tickled 350, long tube headers, 2.5'' pipes pass side 13''/drivers is 17''(headers are diff lengths) then welded to a set of flow super 44's, with 3'' turndowns right under the cab.
needless to say its beautiful to my ears and my neighbors completely hate me.
had a set of cherry bomb glasspacks(they were like $15 each new) and full exhaust but didnt like the sound... wasnt deep enough. also had a set of magnaflows and love their sound but not too annoying. if you want quiet but loud when you punch it look into a set of ''turbo'' mufflers almost every company has a muffler with the word turbo somewhere in the name and they are cheap. sounds like thats your best bet. :texas::beer::texas:
CANTED 11-04-2009, 05:13 PM OK, Mark, you are my pal but.... Hooker Aerochambers and not loud should not be in the same sentence. When I saw this post with "don't want the neighbors down the street to hear" I figured I had no advice here. I have them on my car as well and think they make some sweet music, local law enforcement thinks otherwise. I have been pulled over twice, no violation-no ticket, just wanted to let me know I had their attention. This was running on the primary's of the Qjet both times. I did not bother to tell them " you should hear it with the big holes open". This is a muscle car and I would not have it any quieter, but for those with a noise concern I would not advise. It could just be the application, a different combination will have different results.
mgs72elky 11-04-2009, 07:05 PM Jim, I can see there may be a tad difference in our airpumps. Those Aero's with my little, somewhat warmed up, S/B just isn't gonna give the sound of a big ol knarly rip snortin B/B pushing twice the volume. See? see? You B/B guys are always flexing your muscle huh....
Seriously, with my little combo, I think they have a nice deep rumble, but not 'loud'. Haven't heard Aero's with a B/B in person yet. But also, there's no drone, just sweet music. BTW, I never use the radio.
rangomr 06-09-2010, 07:40 PM Sounds like I need Flowmaster 40 series since I've got the 350 and long Hooker Header. Its too quite so will check tomorrow to see how much they will cost. If you read this and you are running with Flowmaster 40 series now, what was the brake down of your COST. $$$$$$$ :?::?: rango
