I just bought a 1980 El Camino (wanted one forever and just took the plunge).
I have the build sheet that I think is authentic. (The last 6 characters of the VIN agree with the seq. no. on the build sheet). It says that this is a Z16 Royal Knight.
I have read posts here that say I should be looking for a Z16 on my cowl tag, but I don't find that. Here is what's on the tag:
80 11B 1AW80 K .061568
26V 29L 29U L
A51 06 0681

Could some of you old pros educate me?

Your build sheets have more info than the cowl tag. I would go with the build sheet info. To make it certain you can get a Orig. Dealer Invoice at gmmediaarchive.com for $50. It is the arig. invoice for your car. I got one and the info was great. I hope this helps and welcome to this site.

Thanks for the info Wrench. I plan to order the invoice. In the meantime, could anyone help me decode that cowl tag or tell me where to go for that information?

I ordered the original invoice and received it today. The invoice confirms that it is Super Sport and Royal Knight. With that and the build sheet confirming each other I guess the cowl tag for 1980 just did not include the z16 information.
Thanks for all the help and info.

Glad to here you got some good info back. My tag did have the Z15 on it, but its a GMC caballero. It should have had the Y code. I would like to talk one day with a GM builder and find out the mistery of the strange code system. Maybe they where thinking years ahead, $50 for Invoice.

The previous owner found the build sheet under the original headliner when he replaced it.

You can get Dealer invoice and Build sheets for some vehicles at that site gmmediaarchive.com. If you call them, they can point you in the right direction. Good luck
