I saw these advertised in Hemmings mag & see that they are selling them on E Bay. Has anyone tried these? If so, were the results satisfactory? ~ Jon

I often thought about a lamp that was brighter for my back-up lights, like the 1156 in older cars etc.
J C Whitney has had the LED type for quite a while. That's where I saw them a few years ago. Many trucks have LED tail lights now.

In the archives, I saw a post about these that was 2 years old. Noone had anything good to say about them. I was just wondering if there effectiveness had been improved. According to the responses, it's up in the air as to whether they have improved or not. I guess I'll just stick with stock bulbs for now. Thank you for your responses. ~ Jon

Jon , I think this is a subject that a lot of us here are interested in and thanks for posting . Leds have been discussed in previous forums and hopefully someone that knows how to , can post a link here to those past forums . I agree with CoyoteOn2 that the jury is still out on these and some of them for sale are junk . It is a reasonably new field as far as adapting them to older vehicles and some of the bugs need to be worked out to make them adaptable to our older vehicles . Maybe for some good reason I do not understand ; this company will not tell you which bulb fits your car and refers you to their " explanation " section for you to figure it out for yourself . It would be nice if you could contact a company , tell them what you want and have them provide a kit for your specific application . One thing to keep in mind is that because of the low amperage draw , an adapter probably has to be utilized for turn signal applications on our El Caminos . As Eldinino and Thundercat2 said they have had good results so hopefully these Leds bulbs will start to be used more and more and perhaps will become commonplace in our older El Caminos for good reasons . Their website is interesting to read . While I have not bought anything from this company , I have several similiar Led light products used in my home and yard and will add more as time goes by .

Don't misunderstand me, I am referring to the so called LED Bulb that are readily
available at your Local Pep-Boys, ie ↓
http://www.signaldynamics.com/products/bulbs/1157_012.jpg
I have had Customers that have INSISTED that they want them, only to decide, and come to the same conclusion as I tried to explain, they are JUNK.
Now there are LED's that do a good job, and are MUCH BRIGHTER, as well as ALOT MORE MONEY, BUT they are NOT just the simple PLUG AND PLAY bulbs commonly sold on E-bay.
But hay~~ these may work for your application, only you can be the judge of that.
I'm just giving you my 2 cents on the Question is all.

Coyote, I don't see how your original response could have been misunderstood. Your explanation was unnecesary, but noted. As I stated earlier, I was trying to see if improvements had been made. I see more and more LED applications & wondered if they had possibly gotten better. Lenny, yes the website was informative. I was impressed with the explanation of some of the possible pitfalls, ie rapid turn signal or no turn signal operation. They do have a bigger brighter bulb than their original but it doesn't look as though it would fit through the hole in the brake light housing. I think they said it had a diameter of 1 5/8. I think I'll wait & see if someone does come up with a decent "plug & play" bulb. Thanks ~ Jon

I've seen the custom made ones for certain cars that include a bunch of LEDs behind a red plastic lens that is model year etc. specific and was quite impressed with them. They're usually available for older cars, I think, like street rods. I almost bought a set for my 34 Ford Hot Rod, but I really prefer the dark red glass lenses (41 Chevy style) to these orange/red ones even though they are a lot brighter. I don't think this type is available for anything as new as our ELKYs yet.

I saw a 55 Chevy with LED tailights & was quite impressed with their brightness. I didn't know if they were bulbs or some kind of LED assembly for 55 Chevys. Now I see that some vehicles have some kind of kit that can be used. Thanks for clearing that up.

As I was saying, a little more $$$ will get you decent set.

I bought my 1157's at autozone two years ago and work great no complaints here. I don't know though, the front turns failed not longer after installing the rear's ( I read somplace this could happen )but it could have been because they were old and they havent failed yet.
Much briter then the original 1157's

my .02 cents worth all of the leds I have seen look nice and bright looking at them straight on but like lcd display's pn tv's and phones if you look from a side angle they are not near as bright as an incandecent bulb, some cars I've seen almost look like there lights are off from some angles don't want them on my elky yet,:texas: I want to be seen clearly at nite jim
ps are there some new tech ones out that have corrected this problem that I have not seen? if so I might reconsider as leds do run cooler and draw far less amps.

Excuse me, and no offense taken, but it was more for the benefit and interest of other members pointing out the difference. You may know, others may not.
And if it helps my Brother, I don't mind the little time I spend in cutting and pasting. I'm retired now and have LOTS of time. But I want to thank you for your concern.

Thanx Coyote. The pictures make it a lot clearer. The type you've shown do seem to work well but they are kind of orange compared to the glass lenses used on the earlier cars. That was the only point I wanted to make. Appreciate your efforts.

Coyote, Your welcome. Please don't take offense, but I only have one brother + two sisters.
