I am going to install a new fiberglass rear bumper for my 1981 Elky. Has anyone found one supplier better than other? Looking for best fit and finish.

Thanks,
Joe

My Lauren didn't fit perfect but with minor work was liveable.

Got mine from Honest Charlie, who sells Lauren products. None will fit perfect, but Lauren is the best. Please stay away from those on Ebay....You will be disappointed:secret:

I had one on mine- a roll pan that elilminated the bumper. Got it from Honest Charlie's, and the fit was pretty good. Only problem, no rear end protection. I got rear ended this summer, and lost the tailgate, quarter panel and the gas tank. Just lucky that the gas did not leak and catch on fire in the collision.
When I resotored it, I decided to put back the stock bumper. There are fiberglass Bumper Covers, which utilize the inner bumper steel and shocks. Might be a little better than a roll pan.

If you go with a roll pan, Honest Charlie's sells a piece of C-Channel iron that bolts up to the bumper mounts under the car- provides a little protection. Another idea is to have your bumper Powder Coated. I saw one this summer, and it looked pretty good.

that is why I have a Reese hitch on mine - just for some protection. I don't haul anything so I sure don't have any plans to pull a trailer.:satisfied:

I've got a Big piece of iron bolted in behind mine....:secret: actually recommended to tie the frame rails back together in place of OEM bumper. Same rule also applys to front tucked bumpers.

I've powder coated alot of bumpers in the last year or so. The current economy has had alot of people re-thinking their restoration projects. I have a chrome-like powder that has a pretty good chrome finish but it's not quite good enough to put beside real chrome trim.

More often than not people want powder matched to the paint color of their car or just want it black.

What risk are we running by not linking the frame railes back together? I have a roll pan, a fiberglass bumper and front spoiler.

The risk would be the flex of a frame not secured at the terminal ends. If you drive the twisties aggressively with a unsecured front or rear frame end, you will know it. Worse, if you hit something or you are hit, the chosen end just collapses inward. Nothing good comes from this experience. If you run a roll pan or fiberglass front bumper, bridge the frame with a connecting piece of steel, you'll be glad you did.

I recently bought a '78 El the bumper mounts are broken and extremely rusted. I have limited access to a welder, any sugesstions to remount the stock bumper or buy a fiberglass one?

I put a 2x2 bar that tied the frame rales together for support and safety. I also welded a plate to the bottom of the bar that had a removable reciever for a reese hitch. Took 10 minutes to put it on and did not show when you didn't want to see it.
