Yes an MSD 6 works great wiyh the stock HEI. Three things I would do however. 1-Replace the stock coil with a high output coil. 2-Bypass the stock module in the distributor and use the magnetic pickup to trigger the MSD box. Instructions on how to do this are in the MSD 6 instructions. 3-Recurve the stock HEI so that the advance comes in quicker.
This will give you a reliable high performance ignition system.

I've been running a Mallory Comp 9000 for years, zero problems. Just this year I started using a Mallory Hyfire 6AL also. It their version of MSD's box, only less expensive. The only people I've ever heard complain about probelms with Mallory distributors didn't have them wired correctly with a ballast resistor when the wiring instructions call for it. The distributor with a Mallory Promaster coil worked so good I didn't gain anything with the 6AL except a much needed RPM limiter.
I'm not knocking MSD, they have quality products as well. I've just been using my Mallory stuff for so long I can't change.
Here's a link with some info.

Here's a good vendor to do bussiness with, and no, I'm not affiliated with them.

I have used MSD distributors and boxes for many years with no complaints. When I got my 1979 El Camino I decided to try something new so I am using the Petronix HEI distributor/coil with a Mallory Hyfire IV using the magnetic trigger. It works great.

I've ordered the "MSD Super HEI Conversion kit" for my 76. It comes, supposedly, with every thing you need to convert the GM HEI to the MSD ignition with the 6A, New Blaster Coil, bracket, Dust Cover and Coil Wire. It was 199 at Jeg's or something close to 199.00. It should be in by Friday this week.
I listened to eveyone here. Everyone seem to sware by them so I figured it must be good. We'll see it has to be a vast improvement over the stock GM HEI ignition.
