: Winter Storms
Lenny Carey 12-09-2009, 08:38 AM I just came away from watching the Weather Channel on television and was shocked at the footage and accounts of the winter storms that are blasting across the northern part of the country ! From those of us not in it , we hope all you guys and ladies stay safe . What is it like for some of you ?
Tuggy24g 12-09-2009, 08:55 AM Last Saturday we got hit with at least 3 inchs of snow. Roads were not to bad when I left work at 1Am. Other then that we only got rain.
Al87Olathe 12-09-2009, 09:36 AM 4- to 5-foot high drifts all around my place outside of Omaha, and I had to stay home from work today for the first time since I moved here from KC. Can't get out of my driveway or to the building my Elky is in unless someone has a front-end loader to dig out the drive. But then again, my '87 isn't coming out of its coccoon until spring.
texasjim 12-09-2009, 11:33 AM We had a good sand storm yesterday 55 mph winds. I hate wind and sky was brown jim:texas:
nitroxracer78 12-09-2009, 03:13 PM I'm in Chicago and it just stopped snowing, it dropped like an inch or two in an hour. It is still scary with the roads slick and I had to move a couple boxes from one building to another, about a quarter mile down the road. I couldn't see anything walking.
dchute_34 12-09-2009, 03:22 PM We got like 6-8 inches up here in NH. plus 45 mph winds....not fun, but no school:yell:
marshall.pixley 12-09-2009, 03:35 PM whats snow?jk but i dont see much of it here in texas...:texas:
webbd 12-09-2009, 03:47 PM Here in western Colorado we got 8-12 inches of snow, some of that blowing. The roads were slick (Elky doesn't do real well in snow) and we got a snow day yesterday. Then it cleared out and got really cold. -10 degress last night.
CANTED 12-09-2009, 04:03 PM Call Al Gore, tell him how that global warming thing is working out.
skinyfisher 12-09-2009, 04:55 PM 78 and mugie, here humidity is our snow and hardly ever goes away but its not cold !!!!!!!!!:smileyb:
Lenny you just could not stand it and had to start the Florida vers the cold states!!!:secret:
elcamino74guy 12-09-2009, 09:57 PM Monday was pretty wild around here in AZ. I had a job interview to go to in the afternoon and the rain was coming down so hard I couldn't see more than 10 feet in front of my car. Later the winds
got pretty wild then that got followed up by more wind from a dust storm which kind of made everything worse. Wet cars now had a nice coat of mud on them.
It was like an AZ monsoon storm only really cold. Well, cold for southern AZ.
:nanawrench:
Birdman 12-10-2009, 03:06 AM Just cold in NE Texas. Nothing falling except temperatures. High yesterday was 35. 21 now at 5AM. Selling lots of Antifreeze at the Big O. Ya'll stay warm. A hot toddy for medical purpose. An ounce of preventation. Or Two.
:texas:
Tuggy24g 12-10-2009, 09:23 AM I sometimes complain about snow yet other part of the country got twice as much. Geez
FL Kymino 12-10-2009, 05:45 PM had a low of 71 and fog this morning.
elcamino74guy 12-10-2009, 10:26 PM Right now at 11:33PM the temperature is 40F and it barely made 60F today.
It'll probably go down to mid 30's tonight.
AZ not so cold but not so hot either, at least right now...
Lenny Carey 12-11-2009, 07:51 AM Reading accounts here and in the newspaper on this storm is scary to me ! Emergency rooms are reporting numerous incidences from hands in snow blowers , slip and falls , hunters being stranded , vehicles blown over and many thousands without power ! We are lucky here in the Key West that it has gone from a too hot of 83 down to 64 as of noontime . No Skinyfisher , I am smart enough not to rub it in as I know that when Hurricane Season rolls around again it will be our time to be in the chowder . My wife and I will fire up the Chimenea fireplace in the back yard tonight and make a toast that you all are safe and warm .
Marv D 12-11-2009, 08:12 AM If ur sick of snow,, come to sunny south-central Arizona. in fact,, here... heres an account of a young man who was sick of the NE snow and moved here. (LOL this is pretty funny and will lift the cabin-fever gloom)
May 30th:
Just moved to Arizona... Now this is a city that knows how to live!!
Beautiful sunny days and warm balmy evenings. What a place! I watched
the sunset from a park lying on a blanket. It was beautiful. I've
finally found my home. I love it here.
June 14th:
Really heating up. Got to 100 today. Not a problem. Live in an
air-conditioned home, drive an air-conditioned car. What a pleasure to
see the sun everyday like this. I'm turning into a sun worshiper.
June 30th:
Had the backyard landscaped with western plants today. Lots of cactus
and rocks. What a breeze to maintain. No more mowing lawn for me.
Another scorcher today, but I love it here.
July 10th:
The temperature hasn't been below 100 all week. How do people get used
to this kind of heat? At least it's kind of windy though. But getting
used to the heat and humidity is taking longer that I expected.
July 15th:
Fell asleep by the pool. (Got 3rd degree burns over 60% of my body).
Missed 3 days of work. What a dumb thing to do. I learned my lesson
though. Got to respect the ol' sun in a climate like this.
July 20th:
I missed Morgan (our cat) sneaking into the car when I left this
morning. By the time I got to the hot car for lunch, Morgan had died and
swollen up to the size of a shopping bag and stank up the $2,000 leather
upholstery. I told the kids that she ran away. The car now smells like Kibbles and ****s. I learned my lesson though. No more pets in this heat.
July 25th:
The wind sucks. It feels like a giant freaking blow dryer!! And it's hot
as hell. The home air-conditioner is on the fritz and the AC repairman
charged $200 just to drive by and tell me he needed to order parts.
July 30th:
Been sleeping outside by the pool for 3 nights now. $1,500 in damn house
payments and we can't even go inside. Why did I ever come here?
Aug. 4th:
It's 115 degrees. Finally got the air-conditioner fixed today. It cost
$500 and gets the temperature down to 85, but this freaking humidity
makes the house feel like it's about 95. Stupid repairman. I hate this
stupid city.
Aug. 8th:
If another wise ass cracks, "Hot enough for you today?" I'm going to
strangle him. Damn heat. By the time I get to work the radiator is
boiling over, my clothes are soaking wet, and I smell like baked cat!!
Aug. 9th:
Tried to run some errands after work. Wore shorts, and sat on the black
leather seats in the ol' car. I thought my ass was on fire. I lost 2
layers of flesh and all the hair on the back of my legs and ass. Now my
car smells like burnt hair, fried ass, and baked cat.
Aug. 10th:
The weather report might as well be a damn recording. Hot and sunny. Hot
and sunny. Hot and sunny. It's been too hot to do **** for 2 damn months
and the weatherman says it might really warm up next week. Doesn't it
ever rain in this damn desert? Water rationing will be next, so my $1700
worth of cactus just might dry up and blow into the damn pool. Even the
cactus can't live in this damn heat.
Aug. 14th:
Welcome to HELL!!! Temperature got to 115 today. Forgot to crack the
window and blew the damn windshield out of the car. The installer came
to fix it and said, "Hot enough for you today?" My wife had to spend the
$1500 house payment to bail me out of jail.
Freaking Arizona,,, What kind of a sick demented idiot would want to
live here?
elamott 12-11-2009, 10:51 AM We got about 6 inches and a lot of wind. Nothing serious but the cold was a shock to the system. I am not used to it yet.

MN
I left Lomira, WI on Tuesday afternoon 2pm, in a semi with a load of inserts going to the Minneapolis Star Tribune in Minneapolis, MN. This meant running the skinny 2 lane highways over WI to Portage, WI in the beganing of the storm. WI got some lake effect snow, 3", on Tuesday morning before the storm even really got started. No problem making it to Portage,WI. Once onto 94, That's where the bulk of the storm hit. Bad news from there on. Most folks were taking it easy, but there are those who become too itchy and got to try out there bobsleding techniques. Lots of cars in the median and 3 jacknifed semi trucks and one u-haul towing a car jacknifed in the median. The U-Haul had a large gaping hole in the side and some of the guys stuff was hanging out and most was spread out all over the I-94 WB. This was just between Portage, WI, and Wisconsin Dells exit, about a 30 mile stretch. Once we got by these messes, things calmed down & most folks headed for the cover of a truck stop. With not much else going on, I continued on to the Minnesota border, where I shut down for the night. Woke up to a 3 ft snow drift accross the hood of my truck. What a way to get Wednesday started. Lots of snow and wind. We had a mild start to winter, but she managed to sneak in like a bear.

steelybill 12-12-2009, 04:45 PM Yesterday morning we had a low of 8 degrees here in mid-Michigan. That's a bit unusual for December. February is usually the coldest month, with zero and below sometimes. Only had a few inches of snow, but high winds for a few days.
I drove my '77 Elco for 15 years to work every day from when I bought it new. I always laughed when other guys at work couldn't make it there when they lived 5 miles away, and I had 23 miles of snow covered roads and rarely missed work. The 4th gen Elcos I've had were good in snow, and even better with snow tires, which I used a couple times. In 1992, I was looking for a new truck, and the guys at work said I needed a 4X4. I told them I got to work with an El Camino, so I didn't need a 4X4 :smileyb:

dougs85 12-12-2009, 09:58 PM Got in from Tucson, AZ this afternoon after flying there to inspect, pay for and have transported the '66 Austin Healey I bought thru eBay. The highs there were around 64-65º F. Stayed a couple of days to play golf. No golf going on around here right now.

Marv D 12-13-2009, 07:50 AM heheheh ready to move to AZ Doug? By the time you got home to Colorado the proverbial $#!+ had hit the fan hadn't it! For about 5 months we in AZ get to gloat and poke fun at you 'snowbirds' . Then.... June comes and we quietly crawl back under our rock (out of the sun) and keep quiet. <grins>
skinyfisher 12-13-2009, 07:55 AM Don't you guys in AZ have under ground car show lots yet that are at 72 all the time!!!!!!!!!!
Being truth full June to Sept in Florida are not the most comfortable either, you never get acustom to humidity at our levels. But you do get to shower every 15 min inside or out!!

Yeah Marv, was contemplating on moving there until I read your post of the young man who relocated there. Pretty nice in December though. Think I would become a snowbird if I didn't have so many toys.
Now I'm looking at 4-post lifts to see if I can install one in my three-car lofted garage and run one car underneath another. Would have to replace one of the doors with a different type in order to clear the lift. For now using a stall of the next door neighbor who lives in Germany and uses the house for only six weeks in the summer. That is not a permanent situation though.

strkpr00 12-13-2009, 02:03 PM This post is getting so long I have to go back and get more ice for my drink, might as well lower the A/C while I am up.
