Hello guys some of you might of seen my El Camino at the Carlisle car show up in PA. Well I own a an 86 El Camino with a 402 big block in it. Anyway I am not sure what to do with my bumper that is on right now. Should I get new ones or keep the old ones and fix them. Well I own the orginal chrome ones and it came with them impact strip on it and the bumper guard. Well they are really scratched and seem like there is some film over them that wont come off. So I am not sure what to do? any help will be vary appreciated. Once I get my El Camino from the shop I will take pictures so you can better understand my situation.

Mine had about 30 years of use on it so when I redid my Elky, I had it rechromed. I don't know if it is cheaper, but you know that it will fit.

I don't like the impact strips on mine, and I've shopped around on Craigslist. I found a mint rear without the strips for $100, complete with the supports, and even the retainers for the brake light harness. I think I've seen repops for about $225 or so. I never had anything rechromed and don't know what it costs. Are they hard to find where you live?

Tuggy. If your bumpers are reasonably straight, without dents or major rust issues, you would be much better off to have the originals refinished. They will generally be better quality steel, a bit heavier, and guaranteed to fit much better than a catalog bumper. For a bumper that is as described above, you can expend just a little more than the price of a catalog bumper to have them rechromed to a driver or better finish. For a show car finish, and with any repairs of deep scratches or any dents, then that price will easily double. Just my humble opinions............Ken
