The 78-79 header panel is different from the 80-81. None of the parts are interchangable. All parts from the 82-87 header panels are interchangable. I could have sworn we discussed this before.

As the saying goes, history will and does repeat itself. I believe we can all agree on this. But of course someone will disagree.

If things don't get called up more then once this place will get quite very quickly. Besides I think some questions should get asked more often that have been asked before. We have new members joining all the time.

New members could have new information about a subject. That should be a plus in having a subject coming up more then once. More members - more knowledge. Just because a question was asked and answered once before does not mean there isn't another point of view and information on the subject.

It has seemed kind of funny to me lately that we welcome new people and say "there are many friendly and knowledgeable people here". And then the first time they ask a question get told "Use search that's been asked before".

I think that instead of asking the same question again, one should search first & read. If they have something to add, than add it to that thread which will bring it back to the top. It make since to me. 8)

I'm with Tommy on this one. It just makes sense to search first and see if a topic has been discussed. Especially if the "new" topic is the same as the old one, they're just going to get redirected to it, or referenced to it anyway.

I was asking because I called Advanced Auto Parts and asked for replacement headlights for my 80 and the said it only came with four headlights

As a relatively new member I certainly appreciate the forum search function but it is by no means perfect. When I wanted to get some information on "control arm bushings" there were over 260 entries, ah! I thought there is a lot of good information. However many (most?) of the topic threads were not helpful. I know that how the search request is handled is important and of course another topic will just make the search results that much larger for the next member who wants to get information. With the size of previous information almost all the topics have already been discussed and there is almost no need for any more discussion, so why don't we close the forum section?. Now I don't know about other members I look forward to scanning the forum everyday and even if there are some repeats that I am not interested in I just skip over them. Please you guys that have been members for years and seen everything more than once give us new guys a little slack.

Yeah I will probably be guilty of bringing up old news alot, but it is mainly because I don't understand alot of things like the terminology for example. Things many of you might take for granted (i.e. knowing how things work on the engine or where they are) are things I don't know. I still have no clue what EGR is, but I see it ALOT looking for carbs and intake manifolds.

At best I am a shadetree mechanic. I can change oil, do tune ups, and basic stuff like that. I have never gotten inside an engine before and so I don't know alot about it, but one of the things I hope to do is learn as I improve my elky.

For the record though I do use the search ALOT, but often I either don't know what to search for, or the posts don't apply or don't make sense to me. One of the things I hope to do by reading posts here and basically watching you all discuss things is learn more about engines in general. I think this site so far has been the best resource I have found. It is full of knowledgable people who offer alot of different perspectives on things.

On behalf of the newer members here, thanks for your patience! :)

Getting back to lights for a moment...I'm curious what is prefered amonst elky owners. the 2 or 4 light set up. I have the 2 light and prefer it. It seems cleaner to me but I can see how the 4 light would have a more muscle look. what have you got and prefer?

I have a '79 with four headlites and I prefer the look. Now I know that I am going to get a lot of flak for this comment: the two headlite 5th Gen looks too much like gramma's Chevelle.

I wish I had gramma's Chevelle....

I switched to the four headlight setup on my 81. I prefer it more than the two headlight setup.

I totally agree that the 79-81 two headlight set-up is ugly-looking. The overlines of the El Camino are really spoiled by the unimaginative egg-crate grille and front end stuck on there by GM. Choo-Choo and other custom front ends (such as the IROC SS Camaro) are the only way to bring out the true style of the ELKY, IMHO.

By the way I have a complete '85 fascia with grille and all lights here in the garage for sale, as well as an excellent condition front bumper. Anyone in New England interested in them at a reasonable price??

I like the 1978-79 and 1980-81 Elky's as they are unique. I have a 1983 model presently but would be just as happy with either of the prior designs. The later design is actually more monotonous, even if it is smoother. It looks like so many other GM designs of the era, not bad, but not full of character either.
But then, I like spinach too.;-)
